WELCOME TO THE DURMSTRANG INSTITUTE

The educational system of Durmstrang is quite different from that of Hogwarts. Students in their first through fifth years attend general courses as listed below. However, sixth year students are given the opportunity to choose their path, major, and subcourses. This technically happens at the end of fifth year, before summer break. They follow this path through their seventh year, where they either graduate or, if they are found to be extremely talented and able to prove themselves in their chosen course of study, they continue on to the exclusive eighth year, where there's a new focus on study.

WHERE ARE WE LOCATED?

Durmstrang is located in a castle in Germany, set deep in the Black Forest. None who do not already know its location can find their way to it, for the surrounding trees are bewitched to move and change paths. The roof is enchanted so that from the air it looks like trees. First years are guided to the castle; all other students retain a magical knowledge of the school's location.

The main hall of the Institute is incredibly impressive. The left is onyx and is lined with names and honors of those who have accomplished the honor of finishing their eighth year in the school: the wall of pride for the Dark path. Similarly, the right is an opal wall of pride for the Light path. The floor is hematite carved with the names and honors of those of the Grey. Centuries of honor are etched in the walls and floor, the greatest achievement one can accomplish at Durmstrang. There are no ghosts at Durmstrang, unlike Hogwarts. There are spirits that linger, but only those with certain abilities can see or hear them.

In the dining hall, tables are lined along the walls for the first through fifth years. The sixth, seventh, and eighth years are beyond and sorted by path. The eighth years get a table to themselves placed on higher platforms overlooking the students almost as high up with the teachers. First through fifth years are sorted by year.

Lastly, there is the Quidditch pitch, set in the northern part of the grounds. For more about Quidditch, click here.

The official language of Durmstrang is German. All students must know how to speak German, no matter where they're from. For RP purposes, we'll be writing in English.

PATHS

There are three main paths that can be taken. The first is the path of the Dark Arts, concerning everything and anything relating to the manipulation of dark magic. The second, conversely, is the path of Light Magic, which teaches students the proper application of beneficial or good magic. The third path is the middle path, simply known as Grey. Grey students learn either neutral magic or magic that concerns both light and dark, depending on their major.

Majors and Subcourses

Majors are the most defining feature in a student's career. A student's major defines what courses they'll take and their academic expectations. A subcourse is merely the student's best or preferred course within their major, also called a concentration. Though students are technically required to take all subcourses within their major, they can choose to have extra education in a singular subcourse to better their understanding of said course. Sixth and seventh year students are also allowed to take one extra class outside their major/concentration, including classes outside of their path.

Dark Arts Majors

Combative Magic (available to both Light and Dark students): usually produces Aurors, Unspeakables, Magical Law Enforcement Squad, etc.

8th year Intensive Courses

- all 8th years take ALL courses listed, and ONLY these courses. They are very intensive, but leave time for 8th years to attend to other important duties. [However, eighth years may continue an independent study in their choice of subject, most likely the concentration they studied as 6th and 7th years.]

Necromancy: Practicum and Theory [considered a Dark path class]

Patronus Practicum/Advanced Protective Charms [considered a Light path class]

Spell Theory and History [considered a Grey path class]

Underclassmen courses

First through third years:
-- Astronomy
-- Care of Magical Creatures
-- Charms
-- Defense Against the Dark Arts [with an intro to the Dark Arts themselves]
-- Herbology
-- History of Magic
-- Potions
Fourth and fifth years:
Same as first through third, except students add two of the following courses, one fourth year, one fifth:
-- Ancient Runes
-- Arithmancy
-- Divination
-- Transfiguration

At the end of fifth year, students take an intensive round of exams, after which a student decides on his or her path for the upcoming 6th year.

UNIFORMS

The standard Durmstrang uniform is medium grey. It consists of white button-down shirts under grey vests. The boys' uniform has grey slacks; the girls' have knee-length grey skirts with which they wear knee-high socks. Girls may not wear pants. There are no indoor robes, but there are school-issue blood red cloaks to be worn outside. The cloaks bear the Durmstrang crest, and the lining matches ties assigned by path or year.

First through fifth year students, ie., those without a path, all wear red-and-grey striped ties, which match the red lining of their cloaks. From sixth year on, uniforms are worn by path. Dark path students wear black striped ties, and their cloaks are lined black. Grey path students wear silver-grey striped ties and their cloaks are lined silver-grey. Light path students wear white striped ties, and their cloaks are lined white.

It is usually easy to tell what path a student is on sight [or tell that they are 5th year and below], unless they are not wearing their ties.

WANDS

So. Who in the bloody heck makes wands for this part of the world now that Gregorovitch has shuffled off his mortal coil? Look no further than the previously #2 wand-making family in the region, Oleksienko Wands. Considering our 8th years would have been in single digits when Gregorovitch bit it, most of the school would have an Oleksienko wand. They are not the ONLY wands in the area, just the most popular. There are some few lingering Gregorovitch creations around, but the younger and/or poorer the student, the less likely he or she is to have been able to get one.

Well, problem solved! Hrihoriy Oleksienko's family makes these wands, and in fact he himself has made a number. Students are likely to recognize this professor's name and wonder if he is part of the wand-making family. On his part, the professor will easily recognize any of his own or his family's creations.

Here is a link for a list of wand woods and cores, with some properties, as well as flexibility types. It's a very useful reference. Some of it seems Hogwarts/UK specific, but you can adapt things to suit Durmstrang.

RULES, REWARDS, AND PUNISHMENTS

• Failure of ANY kind is not permitted within the halls of Durmstrang. Failures will be suitably punished and failing students will do extra work until they pass whatever class[es] they were failing.

• Duels must be accepted lest you look weak.

• Deaths at Durmstrang by duel or assignment simply mean the deceased was weak and a failure. It demonstrates the student was not up to Durmstrang's standards, and therefore the school is not responsible for the student's death.

• There is no curfew. Drinking and cigarettes are allowed. Sex is permissible. [Note: pregnancies will result in marriage of the two involved whether they like each other or not]. However, it is also the students' responsibilities to show up to class, complete their homework, and pass their exams.

• There is no house cup. Instead, successes will be publicly honored and the honoree presented with a trophy. There is however a Quidditch crest won at the end of the season, to be displayed in sixth and seventh year common rooms until a different path wins the tournament.

• Eighth years who pass their final exams are honored for life in the Great Hall.
