QUICK AND DIRTY GUIDE TO INKSOME
The post I talked about before. I'll mirror this on LJ later, but for now I'm still open to suggestions and useful stuff you think I should include here.
WTF is Inksome?
From their official FAQ: "Inksome is an ad-free, volunteer-driven, 18+ journaling community created by fans for fans." To expand a little on that, Inksome was once upon a time Scribblit -- a Livejournal clone created in response to the wanktastic events of Strikethrough 2007. In April 2008 Scribblit changed owners and became Inksome.
But why would I want to use IS when there's other fifty LJ clones out there?
No ads, 150 icons for free, pretty much any username you'd want is still free. It's run by fans for fans, and it shows. And remember how back in the day you could read locked entries from other people's FLs? That's still possible here. Also, PANDA. Oh yeah, and we have a Magic Index!
WTF is a Magic Index?
I am told we used to have this in the early days of LJ. If you click on interests, you'll be able to see who is the person on Inksome who shares the most interests in common with you, sorting them by number and rarity. It's pretty awesome.
... But I need a code to create an account, that's too much trouble. :/
NO IT ISN'T. IS invites are unlimited for every user and most people are totes cool with sharing them. In fact, all you have to do is comment to this post with an email address and I will send you one even if we've never talked before. Also, 
inksome_invites.
I'd like to try it, but I've heard LJLogin is not compatible with it and I can't liiiive without it.

What about thread expanding/unfolding?
You can still do that! Just install this script, right click on the greasemonkey monkey -> manage user scripts -> LJ Thread Unfolder -> Add -> C&P http://*.inksome.com/*. That should do the trick! (There's also an unfold all version of the script, but you'll need the to install the other one first for it to work.)
I hate the layout and the fact that so many of the S2 styles are brokeded.
Old Scribblit layouts that are considerably less blue can be found here. The stuffed about the borked layouts and other bugs is being worked on, and people have also implemented ways to import a bunch of LJ styles into IS.
THERE IS NO FANDOM ACTIVITY GOING ON THERE
There isn't... much. But I like to think that this is a combination of not enough people actually using IS + people using IS mostly for RP/other stuff. I THINK WE ALL KNOW HOW THIS CAN BE REMEDIED.
Additionally, there's masterlists of existing communities here and here to make your life easier.
