TIMELINE

Saturday, June 29th, 2009	Several Salem students disappear over the weekend. Unknown at the time, students at magical schools across the country have also gone missing.
Sunday, July 12th, 2009	All of the missing students are found, but the previous six months of their memories have been erased.
Monday, August 31st, 2009	First day of 2009-2010 school year. Many students don't return because of the disappearances.
Wednesday, September 30th, 2009	Muggle News: An unidentified woman is struck by a car in Salem. Rowan Cabot later finds out that it's her mother, Rose.
Saturday, October 31st, 2009	Headmaster Corey is gravely injured by an unknown attacker at the Hallowe'en Revels.
Wednesday, November 11th, 2009	Muggle News: There were a rash of pranks across the nation on Halloween. Authorities have no answers.
Friday, December 11th, 2009	Mrs. Hollingsworth announced as interim headmaster while Headmaster Corey continues to recover from his attack.
Wednesday, February 10th, 2010	An anonymous email goes out to Upper Academy students searching to see who is interested in no longer being kept in the dark.
Thursday, February 11th, 2010	A follow-up email is sent revealing the name of an organization meant to bring that which is hidden to the light. The government is revealed to be hurting people in an effort to keep them quiet, Rose Cabot included. The missing students from before are revealed to have gone missing once again.
Wednesday, February 17th, 2010	A student reveals that the emails are right, and the Bureau is in fact silencing people and keeping things quiet.
Friday, March 12th, 2010	Headmaster Corey returns to his duties without any explanations about his health or what's been going on.

Living Arrangements

LIVING ARRANGEMENTS

Each of the four houses have five floors, with freshmen inhabiting the fifth floor, sophomores on the fourth floor, juniors on the third floor, and seniors on the second floor. The first floor consists of a cafeteria and a common room that is open from 6AM to 10PM. Also located on the first floor are the private rooms of the Head of House. When students entering Upper Academy are sorted into their houses, they are then paired with another student of the same house and gender to share a dorm room. Dorm rooms are spacious, equipped with a telephone, high speed internet jacks that connect to the World Wizarding Web, as well as Wi-Fi, two beds, two closets, two bureaus, and a bathroom. Curfew is 11PM on school nights and 1AM on the weekend.

Lower Academy student are not permitted in Upper Academy dorms, and vice versa. However, Upper Academy students from different houses can come and go from each others' dorms between the hours of 9AM and 9PM. Boys and girls are not allowed in each others rooms under any circumstances, and students who are caught breaking this rule will face disciplinary action.

Roommates are paired up as freshmen and remain roommates throughout their last four years at Salem Academy unless extenuating circumstances dictate otherwise.

OOC Mod Note: Roommates are determined in the order of in-coming characters, and are paired up by appropriate house, sex, and year. If you wish one of the characters you're applying for to be paired with one of your friend's, make sure that 1) there are an even number of students of your character's sex in your character's house and year, and 2) that both applications come in together.

This is just the basic layout. Students can rearrange things to suit them, as well as bring in more furniture, electronics, decorations etc, to cover the blank wall.

FAQs

Q1: When is the game set?
A1: This game is running in present-day time. If it's June 5th, 2009 in real time, it's June 5th, 2009 in game. Moon phases and holidays will match moon phases and holidays in the United States.

Q2: Can my character be related to Harry Potter/Willow Rosenberg/Harry Dresden/insert some fictional witch/wizard here?
A2: No. We want entirely original characters. Your character CAN be related to accused witches in history however, and for that, we direct you here for a list of names associated with the Salem witch trials. Do not use any of the names of the four houses, please.

On that note: Harry Potter is real to these students. he's a recent historical figure, and as such, all the fan media surrounding HP in our world [books, movies, video games] do not exist, except from an educational and historical standpoint.

Q3: How do characters get to and from school?
A3: That depends entirely on the family and how Muggle-integrated they are. They can travel by Muggle cars, trains, buses etc if they wish. Cars can drive right up to the school and make use of visitor parking, and there are shuttle vans that run from Salem into the woods and up to the school. Others may choose to arrive by Floo into Salem and use the shuttle vans as well. Wizard and witches of age can Apparate to Salem and then proceed to the school by shuttle. Apparating on school grounds is not possible.

These shuttle vans also run on weekends to take students to and from places of worship in Salem. In Salem one can find churches, synagogues, even a few mosques and nondenominational places of worship.

Q4: How old should my character be?
A4: The birthday cut off is July 31st. If your student is born later than that, they will matriculate the following year. For example, students who will be freshman in 2009-2010 should be born between August 1, 1994 and July 30, 1995. Freshmen will turn 15 sometime during the course of that school year. We are accepting freshmen through seniors only, please.

NB: Lower Academy runs from 6^th-8^th grade. Upper is 9^th-12^th grade. We are only accepting students for Upper Academy. Salem, however, does not accept transfer students, so your character has to have attended since Lower Academy.

Q5: So wait, how does the school year work?
A5: The school year is broken into trimesters, not standard semesters. That gives students more time at school. The school year begins in August, with three weeks break in December/January, another three weeks in April, and the final three week break in July. There will be a schedule posted.

Students however will be excused from classes on personal basis, depending on their religious affiliation. If for instance your student is Jewish, and Yom Kippur does not fall during a break, you student can be excused from classes. He or she will have to make up the work later however.

Q6: How do electives work?
A6: Electives for students who wish to take them. they are encouraged, not required. They are also only one year courses. Once you've taken a particular elective, you cannot take it again, because the curriculum does not change. You must choose another elective, or simply have a free period. There are some exceptions: Divination, Advanced Transfiguration, and Wandless Magic are open to juniors only and are a two-year course. They are also by recommendation only and restricted to 10 students apiece.

Q7: So just how Muggle-like is Salem?
A7: Very! Rooms have high-speed internet, and students probably have iPods or other MP3 players. They often follow Muggle music bands, television shows etc. Supernatural-themed shows and movies can make for humor at how Muggles think magic works. It's difficult for there to not be Muggle influence on pretty much all Wizarding families in America. Few students would be at any sort of loss when presented with Muggle contraptions.

However, cell phones do not work on campus due to magical interference. Wi-Fi does work however, because Salem has a campus intranet. Computers in dorm rooms can run off of landlines, and laptops off of campus Wi-Fi. Students can send each other emails the same way they send owls. It all depends on the students themselves how they prefer to communicate.

As for the town of Salem, students can buy school supplies there. The wizarding shops are mixed in with Salem tourist shops. Muggles don't seem to nitice them. All supplies needed for school can be bought there, but there is no separate place like Diagon Alley.

Q8: Where does Salem pull its student base from?
A8: Students from all over the United States are eligible to enroll at Salem. Considering the location, it's more likely to have students from the Northeastern states but that's not to say we won't have the occasional Californian.

Q9: Students are allowed cars. So does that mean if mine has a car, he doesn't have to dorm?
A9. Sorry, no. All students are required to board at Salem, so they can be sorted in houses like their peers. They are allowed cars so that they may go where they wish on weekends, or even weekdays so long as they're back by curfew.

Q10: Why isn't there a section for blood status on the applications?
A10. Because blood status is not truly an issue at Salem. We have a small handful of blood purists, but are not looking for that to be a factor in game, especially since we make a point of mentioning how integrated into the muggle world American witches are. It's rare to have students or families focused on blood purity.

Q11: Do the houses match Hogwarts houses exactly?
A11. Not exactly but they're very close. The biggest difference would be Proctor. Proctor isn't just for clever students, it's also for the artistic/creative or those focused on beauty in any forms. While we're on the subject, a point about Wardwell: Wardwelll is the house for those cunning and self-important, but that doesn't make them evil. Wardwells can be just as friendly as Osborns, so long as bottom line, they're sure they get what they work for or believe they deserve. Osborns, on that subject, may be very friendly, but that neither makes them soft nor stupid. They can still be forces to reckon with. And your brave Bishops don't have to be nice people to be adventurous.

Q12: What pets/familiars are allowed?
A12. Anything that is allowed at Hogwarts: owls, cats, toads etc. Also, anything small and non deadly, and able to survive on its own while students are at class. Aquatic creatures all allowed so long as the creature's tank does not require a filter. Dogs/Crups are not allowed.

Q13: How do you decide what character get caught breaking rules?
A13. We make an AIM chat with the players involved an roll dice, making sure there's someone to witness the rolls. It's all pure chance. This is most commonly used for members of the opposite sex getting caught in each others rooms. Punishment for getting caught is usually one week's house arrest. For further details, please contact the mods. Please be sure to inform the mods if your character is planning to do something against school rules!

Q14: How do I get a journal here? It's invite only!
A14: Once your application has been accepted, we will issue you an invite for you to create your journal. Easy as that. =)

Q15: Why am I not getting notifications in my own journal?
A15. This is a strange little glitch that's easily fixed. After creating your journal, and validating, you will want to go here. Click on "Manage Message Settings." In Messages settings, you must uncheck the box that says "Someone comments in my journal, on any entry." Otherwise, you will not receive email notifications of comments.

Each student has a set schedule depending on year. All students of the same year have the same schedule regardless of House, with the exception of electives. Schedules are as follow: [links open in new widows/tabs]

UNIFORMS

During weekdays, while attending classes, all students are required to wear the appropriate Salem Academy uniform. The uniform consists of a white shirt or blouse, khaki pants for boys or a khaki skirt and white knee socks for girls, and a tie that corresponds with the student's house. Shoes are expected to be black and sensible. Sneakers are acceptable, but flip-flops, sandals, open-toed shoes, and boots of any kind are not. An example of what is expected can be found here.

After classes and over the weekend, students are free to wear whatever they wish, so long as it isn't obscene or involve slogans that contain profanity.

SCHOOL CALENDAR

We have five calendars for the events and holidays at Salem Academy. You are HIGHLY encouraged to use or get a gmail address and add these to your own calendar for ease. You no longer need invites to create a gmail address, but if you wish for one, we'll supply it to you. The direct links are here:

Birthdays: Character birthdays. Please let us know if we've missed your character's birthday or gotten it wrong.

Events: Parties, balls, banquets, and such that are not related to Quodpot or cheerleading.

Exams: This one's pretty obvious. ;-)

Holidays: Includes some standard holidays, but also school recesses.

Quodpot: Everything Quodpot &cheerleading. Practices, finals, tryouts, big games etc.

Again, we suggest getting a gmail so you can have your own calendar to add this to. At the bottom right of each calendar is a +Google Calendar button, which adds it to your own calendar.

GHOSTS

Unlike Hogwarts, Salem Academy is not riddled with cheerful or playful ghosts for students to interact with. In fact, Salem only has one ghost, a young woman by the name of Abigail Eastey. She's more a poltergeist than a spirit. Abigail was the youngest daughter of Mary Towne Eastey, a woman falsely accused of witchcraft and executed for her "crimes" during the trials. Unlike her mother, Abigail was an actual witch, and one of Salem Academy's first students. But she was unstable, and wound up taking her own life sometime before her family name was exonerated in 1711. Her spirit has never left the school, and though at times she can be a bit vengeful, she mostly plays harmless tricks on students.

Abigail does not interact with students, but can easily be blamed when things go awry or missing. She's unsettling-looking: pale with long dark hair, dark soulless eyes, sometimes with blood at their corners, and a permanent displeased frown.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

There are several extracurricular activities occurring on campus that students are free to participate in. For those interested in athletics, there are the four quodpot teams and their corresponding cheerleading squads, though tryouts are required. Other student organizations of interest are as follows:

Not all of the magical creatures you'd find around Hogwarts are located in the Unites States. There are also some few that are native or unique to the Americas as well. Here's a list of the commonly found magical beings and creatures found in America.

Aethonan - An Aethonan is a breed of winged horse. They are chestnut in color and live mainly in Britain, but they have been seen elsewhere.

Ashwinder - The Ashwinder is a serpent that is created from the remains of any magical fire that is allowed to burn unchecked. The Ashwinder is pale-grey with glowing red eyes. They rise from the embers of the dying fire, and slither off into a dark corner to lay their eggs, leaving an ashy trail behind. Ashwinders only live for an hour, and will collapse to dust when they have laid their eggs. Ashwinder eggs are red and give off intense heat. If they can be frozen with a Freezing Charm, they can be used in a Love Potion, or eaten whole as a cure for ague.

Bigfoot - The Yeti, aka Bigfoot or the Abominable Snowman, stands up to 15 feet, and is a snowy white furred humanoid, that may be related to the troll. It fears fire. The Yeti will attack and eat any thing that it meets, so no witch or Wizard has had the opportunity to study it up close yet. Yeti's are one of the Wizarding Worlds worst kept secrets as there had been so many Muggle sightings of the Yeti, the International Confederation of Wizards had to place a permanent International Task Force up in the mountains to take care of it and Tibet has one of the worst Wizarding secrecy records, due to its continuing breaches of Clause 73 of the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy.

Bundimun - The Bundimun is a magical creature found worldwide. It is a greenish fungus with eyes, that can destroy a whole house. The secretions of the Bundimun rot building structure, and if a house gets a large enough infestation it can collapse. Scouring Charms can clear out small infestations, but large colonies should be dealt with by the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures (Pest Sub-Division). Bundimun secretions, when diluted, are used in some magical cleaning solutions.

Centaur - A Centaur is a magical creature that is a fusion of a human and a horse. Despite being intelligent, Centaurs in the UK are classified as Beasts by the Ministry of Magic at their own request since they were unhappy at having to share Being status with Hags and Vampires. American Centaurs, however, consider themselves magical beings, not beasts.

Chizpurfle - A Chizpurfle is a type of very small parasite. Crab-like in appearance, they are up to a twentieth of an inch with fangs. Magic attracts them and they are commonly found in the fur and feathers of Crups and Augureys. They attack magical objects like wands and cauldrons, grawing through to the magical core or gorging on the last remnants of potions. In the absence of magic, Chizpurfles attack Muggle electrical items. This explains the curious failing of new electrical goods. Chizpurfle infestations are usually easily handled by patented potions on the market, but more severe infestations need to be dealt with by the Pest Sub-Division of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures.

Clabbert - A Clabbert is an arboreal creature that resembles a cross between a monkey and a frog. Its smooth skin is mottled green, and it has short horns and a wide grinning mouth full of razor sharp teeth. Its long arms and webbed hands and feet allow it to move gracefully through the trees. On the Clabbert's forehead is a large pustule which flashes red when the Clabbert senses danger. The Clabbert is generally found in the southern states of America, but can now be found worldwide. American Wizards used to keep Clabberts to give them early warning about approaching Muggles. The International Confederation of Wizards were forced to introduce fines to stop this. Despite looking nice at night, a tree full of glowing Clabbert pustules caused curious Muggle neighbors to wonder why the Wizards still had their Christmas lights up in June.

Crup - A Crup is a wizard-bred dog that strongly resembles a Jack Russell Terrier, except that a Crup has a forked tail. They are Wizard-bred dogs, since they are extremely loyal to wizards and ferocious toward Muggles. They will eat almost anything. Crup owners are required by law to remove the tail of the animal when it is six to eight weeks old, using a painless Severing Charm in case they are noticed by Muggles. A license from the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures must also be obtained, and the owner must pass a test to see if they are able to control the animal in Muggle-inhabited areas.

Doxy - The Doxy, sometimes referred to as the Biting Fairy, is a small Fairy-like creature. Sometimes mistaken for a Fairy, the Doxy is covered thick black hair, and has an additional sets of arms and legs. Doxies have shiny beetle-like wings, and a double row of sharp venomous teeth. If bitten, a Wizard or Witch should take an antidote immediately. Preferring cold climates, the Doxy is found throughout Europe and North America. Doxies bury their eggs underground, and can lay up to five hundred in one go. The eggs generally hatch in two to three weeks. Doxies are considered pests. They can infest houses, taking up residence in the draperies. Removing them requires a good supply of Doxycide.

Dugbog - The Dugbog is a marsh-dwelling magical creature. It resembles a piece of dead wood while stationary. It has finned paws and sharp teeth, and it glides through marshland, feeding on small animals, and occasionally attacking the ankles of humans who venture into its habitat. Its favorite food is Mandrake, and Mandrake-growers have found their plants nothing more than a bloody mess when they pull them out of the ground.

Fairy - A Fairy is a small human-like creature with large insect-like wings, which are either transparent or multicolored. They have a limited intelligence, and live mainly in woodlands or glades. The fairy is a vain creature, and will often allow itself to be used as decoration by Wizards. They possess a weak brand of magic that allows it to evade its predators such as the Augurey. The fairy cannot speak; instead, it makes a high-pitched buzzing noise to communicate with its fellow fairies. Fairies can lay up to fifty eggs in one go, laying them on the underside of leaves. The eggs hatch into brightly colored larvae, and, at six-to-ten days, they spin themselves into a cocoon. They emerge a month later as adult fairies. The Muggle impression of the fairy is a generous one, having been ingrained into children's minds in the form of "fairy tales". Wizards believe that, of all the magical creatures in the world, the fairy, along with the unicorn, have received the best Muggle "press."

Flobberworm - The Flobberworm is a ten-inch, toothless pale purple worm which eats vegetation, especially lettuce and cabbage. The mucus it exudes is used to thicken potions. Both ends of the Flobberworm are identical, and it prefers to live in damp ditches. Flobberworms do not have teeth and do not bite.

Ghoul - Ghouls are ugly creatures that resembles a slimy, buck-toothed ogre. They tend to live in the attics or barns of wizards and witches. They are relatively harmless creatures and are just seen as nuisances because of the noise they make. They are relatively dimwitted, and live off of bugs and other household pests. At most, they will groan and throw objects. A Ghoul Task Force exists at the Ministry of Magic, under the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. The Task Force is used to remove unwanted ghouls from houses that have passed in Muggle ownership. There is a variety of ghoul, called the Chameleon Ghoul.

Gnome - A gnome is a common magical creature which infests the gardens of wizarding households. It looks roughly like a potato with legs. Gnomes live in burrows underground. There they dig up the roots of plants, wreaking havok on the garden, and requiring the resident witch or wizard to routinely perform pest control (known as "de-gnoming"). This typically involves taking hold of a gnome, swinging it around until it is dizzy, and then throwing it out of the yard. The species has such a low level of intelligence that, when a de-gnoming is being carried out, they will hurry out of their burrows to see what's causing the commotion. This, of course, renders them more easily caught. One can also use a Jarvey to de-gnome a garden, but this method is considered much too violent, and is thus seldom used.

Horklump - The Horklump resembles a fleshy pink mushroom covered in black bristles. Originally native to Scandinavia, the Horklump is now found throughout Europe and the Americas. They use sinewy tentacles to root around in the earth for their desired food, earthworms. They are fast breeders, and can cover an average garden in a matter of days. The Horklump is the favored delicacy of the Gnome.

Jarvey - The Jarvey resembles an overgrown ferret, and is commonly found in Britain, Ireland, and North America. The Jarvey is capable of human speech, although true conversation with a Jarvey is impossible. The creature uses short, usually rude, statements and phrases in an almost constant stream. Jarveys live below ground, and their diet consists of moles, voles, rats, and Gnomes. Jarvey are particulary good at hunting Gnomes, and are sometimes employed to degnome a garden, although their methods are usually brutal.

Jobberknoll - The Jobberknoll is a small, blue speckled bird that never makes any noise until the moment before it dies. It then lets out a long scream, which consists of every sound it ever heard backwards. Jobberknoll feathers are used in Truth Serums and Memory Potions.

Knarl - The Knarl is a creature that greatly resembles a hedgehog. They are highly suspicious creatures and believe that any food left out for it is a lure for a trap. Knarls will usually go beserk if they see an attempt to poison them, causing damage to a garden. Muggle children have often been blamed for damage committed by a Knarl.

Kneazle - A Kneazle is a magical creature, similar to a cat in appearance. They have spotted, speckled or flecked fur, large ears and a lightly plumed tail, like a lion. They make excellent pets if they like a Witch or Wizard. They are very intelligent, independent and occasionally aggressive, and have an uncanny ability to detect suspicious and distrustful people. They can also safely guide their owner home. Kneazles can interbreed with normal cats, and generally have up to eight kittens in every litter. Kneazle owners are required to have a license to own the animals. Some Witches and Wizards make a living by breeding Kneazles or part-Kneazles.

Merpeople - Merpeople are sentient beings that live underwater, and are found all over the world. Their customs and habits are mysterious. In the UK, like the Centaurs, they refused being status in favour of beast. American merpeople however, like American Centaurs, also consider themselves beings, not beasts. Merpeople can breathe above the waves for a time, but it is unclear if they can ever truly leave their habitat. Merpeople society is based around organized communities, and they have a great love of music. Their language is known as Mermish, and only a few Wizards know how to speak it. However, since their language can only be heard properly underwater, it sounds like screeching when spoken above water.

Mooncalf - The Mooncalf is a shy creature that only comes out of its burrow during a full moon. The Mooncalf has smooth, pale grey skin, and four spindly legs that end in large flat feet. The Mooncalf also has bulging eyes that sit on the top of its head. Once the Mooncalf is in the moonlight, it performs complicated dance moves standing on its hind legs. It is believed that this is part of the Mooncalf mating ritual, but also has the side effect of creating geometric patterns in wheat fields that confuse Muggles. Mooncalf dung, if harvested before the sun rises, will make magical plants grow fast and strong.

Niffler - A Niffler is a treasure-hunting creature resembling a porcupine with a long narrow snout. They are very attracted to shiny things, which makes them wonderful for locating anything metallic or shimmery, but they might bite if a person is wearing jewelry. Nifflers are kept by Goblins to burrow for treasure. Nifflers are gentle creatures, and can be affectionate to its owners but will also destroy belongings and property if kept in a house. Nifflers live twenty feet below the ground in lairs, and can produce six to eight young in a single litter.

Nogtail - The Nogtail is a demon-like creature resembling a piglet, but stunted by narrow black eyes, a thick stubby tail, and long legs. It is mainly found across Rural areas in Europe, America and Russia. Nogtails sneak into a pigsty, and suckle on an ordinary pig which curses the farm. The longer the Nogtail goes undetected, the longer the blight will stay on the farm. Fast and hard to catch, the only way to make sure the Nogtail will not come back is to chase it away with a pure white dog. The Pest Sub-Division of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures maintains a pack of a dozen albino bloodhounds specifically for this purpose.

Plimpy - The Plimpy is a small round fish with two legs ending in webbed feet. It lives in deep lakes, and feeds on water snails. The Plimpy is not dangerous, but will nibble on the feet of unsuspecting swimmers. Merpeople consider the Plimpy to be a pest, and they deal with it by tying its legs into a knot and letting it drift away.

Re'em - The Re'em is native to the wilds of North America and the Far East. The Re'em is extremely rare, resembling giant oxen with a golden hide. Re'em blood gives immense strength to the drinker. However, since demand far exceeds supply, and obtaining the blood in the first place is extremely difficult, it can only be found on the open market rarely.

Sea serpent - The Sea Serpent is an aquatic creature found in several oceans around the world. Reaching over a hundred feet long with a horse-like head and snake-like body, the Sea Serpent is a fearsome looking creature. Despite this, no Sea Serpent has ever been known to hurt a human, despite Muggle stories of encounters with the beasts.

Shrake - A Shrake is a magically-created species of fish, found in the Atlantic Ocean. The creature is covered in spines and deliberately seeks out and destroys Muggle fishing nets. The first Shrakes were supposedly created in the early 1800s by a group of wizard fisherfolk who had been insulted by Muggles. The shrake, by damaging the nets used by Muggles to fish in that area of the sea, cause no end of trouble.

Streeler - The Streeler is a giant snail that is native to Africa, but has been successfuly bred by Wizards in Europe, Asia and North America. The Streeler changes color on a hourly basis, and leaves behind a trail of venom so toxic that it burns all vegetation that it touches. Streeler venom is one of the few known substances that can kill Horklumps.

Thestral - A Thestral is an unusual type of winged horse, invisible to those who have not witnessed death. Thestrals are considered highly unlucky by most wizards and, to those who have seen death, appear as carnivorous, skeletal horses with reptilian features.

Troll - A Troll is a magical creature of prodigious strength and immense stupidity. Trolls generally reach a height of twelve feet and weigh up to a ton. They are violent and aggressive, and engage in unpredictable behavior. Trolls feed on raw flesh, and are not fussy what they eat, from animals to humans. There are three types of Troll, each with its own unique set of physical differences: mountain, forest and river trolls.

Vampire - A Vampire is a magical being that is known for biting people on the neck and sucking their blood. They are usually pale and gaunt, with sharp teeth for puncturing the neck. They have an aversion to garlic, and can be kept at bay by its presence. Vampires were first classified as beings by the Ministry of Magic in the UK, a fact that led both the Centaurs and Merpeople to decline the same status since they did not wish to be associated with them. However, in America, all trhee groups are classified as beings by the Bureau of Magic. They are not considered to be Wizards, and the treatment of Vampires is laid down in the Bureau's Guidelines for the Treatment of Non-Wizard Part-Humans.

Werewolf - A werewolf is a human who, upon the rising of the full moon, turns into a fearsome near-wolf. Werewolves can be distinguished from regular wolves by several small distinguishing characteristics, such as the pupils of the eyes, snout shape, and tufted tail. At all other times, they appear as normal humans, though will often seem to be ill as the full moon approaches. This condition is caused by infection with lycanthropy, usually occurring when a human is bitten by a transformed werewolf. There is no known cure.

QUODPOT

Quodpot, an American version of Quidditch. With explosives! Like true Americans! It's much like Muggle American football in that there are 11 players per team [plus reserves], with the same named positions.

Offense: Quodpot plays offense with the following positions: two wide receivers, two offense tackles, two offensive guards, one center, one tight end, one quarterback, one fullback/running back, and one halfback/running back.

Defense: Quodpot plays defense with the following positions: two defensive ends, two defensive tackles, two cornerbacks, two safeties, two end linebackers, and one nose guard/middle linebacker.

The team captain on each team is the quarterback. For jersey numbers, please reference here. Tackles and guards will be considered offensive/defensive linemen. Please note due to connotations, the number 69 will not be available for use. ;-) If you don't know what number range your character should be in, let us know and we can either give you a range or just assign a number for you!

Note: Tryouts are at the end of the school year. Sophomores through juniors can try out at the end of the school year. New freshman can either tryout the second week of September and make reserves, or wait until next June to try for a position. Only in rare cases, if a freshman is very skilled, will he or she make the team as more than a reserve.

Cheerleader tryouts occur at the same time as Quodpot.

RITUAL MAGIC

Candle Magic: Perhaps one of the oldest forms of magic, candle magic may seem simple, however it's anything but. It serves a variety of purposes like overcoming bad habits, attracting things or people, settling disputes and tensions, protection, and aiding those with the gift of divination. Students will learn just about everything from making their own candles and incense to performing basic rituals. Using a combination of incense and specially made candles, this form of magic is surprisingly powerful as it involves fire, an unpredictable element. One must be careful, concise, focused, and precise when using candle magic, because if done incorrectly, the effects of a candle ritual can backfire on a witch or wizard in spades. Candle magic requires a great deal of patience as some candle rituals must be repeated over a series of days making it important that candles are placed in an area that won't be disturbed.

Wards and Seals: Wards and seals are primarily used for protecting a person, place, or thing, blocking negative magical influences, or, well, sealing away something. They consist of magical symbols written on a scroll or on whatever it is they're meant to affect, and they are usually written with the use of a wand and a specific incantation. Wards and seals can be undone and erased, but breaking one by force can result in a violent magical backlash.

Doll Magic: In European, African, South American, and Caribbean folk magic, dolls were used for many purposes and were used to represent gods and goddess, spirits, and people. While the more spiritual aspect comes from Muggle influences, doll magic is just as important in the Wizarding world. Dolls can act as powerful focuses for a variety of magics. They can be used in love magic to bring two people together, to relieve worries and stress, for protection to bind people from doing harm, and for healing. Dolls can be made from just about anything: sticks, twine, scraps of fabric, clay, etc., and students are encouraged to use whatever feels natural to them while learning the do's and don'ts of doll rituals.

WAND WOODS

Wood types: [Limited to North American trees unless handed down by family or custom made.]

Alder - Divination, or "fortune telling." Self-protection/defense.

Apple Tree - Love and beauty magic. Spell writing. Good for powerful healing magic and dealing with serious wounds. These people tend to be overly interested in the affairs of love and romance. They are great poets, and write many of our spells.

Ash - Psychological magic and law. Magic relating to intelligence. These people judge a lot, and are very obsessed with the rules. They are also very quick to learn.

Beech - Old magic and history. Hopeful magic and wishes. These people tend to be historians and archaeologists. They are also dreamers, writing a lot of fiction (fantasy in particular).

Birch - With a satin like sheen, the wand is usually very thin and elegant and a reflection of its owner. Usually a female gravitated wood.

Butternut - Lightweight wood native to North America. The nuts are used in baking and candy so it is good for those adept in magical cooking and who have a sweet disposition.

Chestnut - A wood that is strong and very durable. This wood is a favorite of those with strong moral fiber as well as those who posses and take pride in physical strength.

Elderberry - Healing after emotional injury. Regeneration magic. These people are the creepy scientists trying to bring the dead back to life. Some don't go that far, and are simply good at recovering from traumas. They also help others through trauma. They notice a lot of people come to them with their troubles.

Elm - Magic relating to animals and magical creatures. These people are talented with animals, and love the outdoors.

Fir - Aromatic wood found in colder climates. Mostly this wood denotes those who have a strong bond with family and friends, enjoy being the host of many parties and making others smile. The owner of a Fir wand generally enjoys the outdoors and winter sports.

Hazel - Wisdom-related magic and power-related magic. Creativity and dowsing. Users of these wands tend to be very intelligent and creative. Teachers and artists use Hazel a lot.

Hemlock - In ancient Greece, poison was brewed from the Hemlock and therefore this makes a wonderful wood for those who are a fan of potion making or even those involved in the dark arts.

Hickory - This wood is tough yet flexible and makes a good match for those who work with their hands, craftsmen, hunters, and archers.

Holly - Strong protective magic and light-hearted magic. Courageous magic, and dream magic. These people tend to be strong on the defensive, but are fun company. They are very often class clowns, and uplifting to others who may be depressed.

Hornbeam - A very hard wood used often for wagon wheels and is a wonderful match for those who adore travel and discovery.

Maple - The maple is mostly known for its fast growing height and beautifully colored leaves in the Autumn. Mostly used by those who are quite tall in stature or overly gorgeous and proud of their appearance. Models and those who enjoy the wonders of nature and the human form.

Oak - This is sort of the general power tree. Strength and courage are related to the oak. Users of this wand tend to be leaders.

Pine - Ancient magic. Practical, survival-based household magic. Magic associated with longevity, including healing. Party magic celebration. These people are fun friends. They throw the parties, and they are the cooks.

Poplar - Preventative magic, not really protection. Graceful magic, meaning anything that might contribute to one's dignity. These people are cautious, but aware that some negative situations have tremendously positive outcomes. They are very dignified, and sometimes can be found in positions of royalty.

Rowan - This is the all-purpose protection tree. Protection from everything almost. It also is a "grounded" tree with all five senses working together. Magic regarding success. These people can be a little paranoid, and are aware of everything. They are also good entrepreneurs.

Spruce - The long wood fibers of the spruce tree make it ideal in paper and parchment making. Most owners of a spruce wand are intelligent and enjoy reading, studying, and may become accomplished authors.

Sycamore - Its properties were often utilized in Egyptian medicine and thus is a useful wood for healers.

Willow - Magic dealing with water, and psychic abilities. Dream magic. These people tend to be emotional, empathetic, and spend a lot of time sleeping.

Yew - Transformation, Divination, work with spirits and magical creatures. Those who have Yew wands tend to be secretive and mysterious, with a very serious side.

WAND CORES

Billywig Stinger - Exceptionally good when working levitation charms. The only drawback to this core is that it is somewhat unstable, given the volatile nature of the insect that provides it. Also useful when dealing with emotional healing.

Centaur tail hair - The sheer strength and speed of the centaur is harbored in its tail hair lending both quickness and ferocity when casting spells, charms, jinxes and hexes.

Centaur mane hair - The cool logic of the centaur makes this a very stable core material. Long known for their intellectual ability, centaurs are also known for their skill as healers and this core is very good for healing charms.

Crup Hair - This core is good for counter curses, and spells to speed something up. The core "Crup Hairs" prefers someone who is constantly in motion, someone who is strong, and/or someone who never gives up easily.

Dragon Heart String - Chinese symbol for Emperors and power this core is favored by those of noble blood and those who crave power.

Dragon Scale - protection and power are combined to amplify the spells cast from a wand with this core.

Doxy Tooth - dwelling in colder climates, a Doxy is also known as the biting fairy. The power they hold in their teeth causes jinxes and hexes to become extremely hard to remove.

Fairy Dust - intensified magic and useful in making both love and luck potions.

Fairy Hair - lending beauty and softness to both the owner and the spells cast. Wonderful in working with magical decorating or landscaping.

Fairy Wing - a staple for those who work with levitation charms or are expert fliers.

Flobberworm Slime - a very gentle creature sometimes classified as boring, yet they multiply quite fast and in large numbers. This core grants the wand strength in multiplication or enlargement of objects.

Fox Fur - The fur of a fox used in the core makes this wand a useful tool for transfiguration. The most powerful users can use this wand for invisibility.

Ghoul Slime - despite their terrible reputation, ghouls are of little harm to wizards. Their slim is used in wand making to provide strength in hex deflection and charm repellent.

Gnome Toenail - though the Gnome is not a particularly intelligent creature, their feet are quite hard and bony and so durable they have no need for protection. A gnome toenail in your wand will not only grant you luck but strengthen shield charms.

Goblin Sweat - a greedy creature that is quite persistent and con speak both in human languages and their own “Gobbledegook”. Cores made of this help with deciphering problems and attracting wealth.

Hinkypunk hair - a one--legged swamp dweller is cunning and evil. Using its lantern, it lures unsuspecting muggles and wizards into the swamp and their subsequent death. Trickery, illusion charm strength and jinx strength is gained from this core.

Hippocampus scale - Good with water-related spells, and can perform spells to destroy evil underwater creatures. It makes a good wand for care of animals and gardening work, as it is harmonious with almost all un-human creatures.

Hippogriff feather - Hippogriff feathers make powerful wand cores and can perform almost all kinds of magic well. They excel in transfiguration and levitation especially, and are very common in European wands.

Hippogriff Tailhair - skeptics love this one. Nobility and truth are held as a desirable trait with this beast and are passed thus onto the wand and user. Will cause spells to backfire on a user of poor moral fiber.

Horklump Bristle - a Scandinavian creature that resemble a pink hair mushroom. It is a delicacy of Gnomes and promotes peace.

Jarvey feather - A valuable wand core, the Jarvey feather is good at all simple spells and many advanced ones. It is most effective when used to bewitch an object or an animal, but is also used to organize things and to clean dishes.

Jobberknoll feather - Jobberknoll feathers are good wand cores for charms, advancing along with its owner through time. It is also used in simple cooking spells and transfiguration.

Kneazle Hair - a catlike creature with large ears, detects suspicious activity with ease. Cunning, crafty and highly attuned to deception. Useful in performing truth charms and Legilimency.

Merperson scale - great intelligence and fairness is exuded by the noble merpeople. Core helps with the practical application of studies. A lot of members of the wizengamot have had this as a core to their wand.

Mooncalf Foot Skin - the power of the mooncalf’s complex mating dance is concentrated in this core. Used well by artists and lovers.

Niffler Fur - attracted to all things shiny this core reflects the vanity of the owner and is helpful in attaining wealth and power.

Nogtail Snout - if a nogtail suckles from a regular sow, the farm will suffer until it is driven out by a pure white hound. Properties of this core help the owner to attract and attain the wealth of others and amplifies spells that inflict pain or despair.

Owl Feather - the intelligence, speed and dedication of the owl causes the core to gravitate to those of a dutiful nature. Strong willed and a constant friend.

Phoenix Feather - The phoenix feather represents power and strength in a wizard, which is why her wand is one of the most powerful of all. It improves the effectiveness of spells with time and practice, and can be used to do great things, good or evil.

Pixie Dust - jokes and tricks are the norm for this creature. The emit a high-pitched babbling sound and are often quick and excitable. A feminine core that usually picks young silly girls with large hopes and dreams.

Plimpy Flesh - considered a pest by merpeople, this core gravitates to those who are also considered pests by those who encounter them.

Puffskein fur - The fur of a puffskein is a good wand core for love spells and spells related to music, as the puffskein itself is known for making pleasant noises.

Rabbit hair - the rabbit is known to be fast and peaceful and both of these qualities are reflected in its use as a core.

Raven Feather - loud noisy black birds that crave attention. Core gravitates to those with the same personality as a rave and it also provides strength in a mufflatio charm.

Salamander Tail - bred and lives in the fire and con only life outside of the flames if it is given pepper to eat. The blood had incredible healing properties and therefore the core is a favorite of magical healers of both wizards and creatures.

Sea Serpent Tounge - though they look extremely foreboding, the creatures are docile. Many who own this core are know as a gentle giant or win sweetest personality.

Shrake Spine - legend claims that this spiny fish was created by wizards who were constantly bothered by muggle fishers and the Shrake would ruin their nets, causing them to leave and never return. This core is mainly used by those who have distaste for muggles.

Sprite Wing - water sprites, especially females, are extremely vain. They will lure muggle and wizarding men into their streams and leave them to drown. Those who enjoy affection and attention but find it difficult to love attract this core.

Streeler Slime - changing color on the hour and is often kept as a pet by African natives due to this amazing ability. Its slime is so toxic that it will burn away all vegetation exposed to it. Used by potions master and herbology scholars alike.

Troll spittle - another favorite of aurors for the sheer strength and power of the trolls. Three varieties are available: Mountain, Forest and River.

Unicorn Hair - pure fast and shy creatures that live in the forest. Their blood can sustain the life of any dying creature though to kill a unicorn is the ultimate sin. This core is best used by those who are contemplative, cautious and kind.

Vampire Blood - creatures of the night who continue their life by sucking it out of others. Core gravitates to those who are adept at the dark arts and love being out and up all night.

Veela Hair - This wand is useful for things related to love and/or beauty. It's also good for transfiguration and charms. However it can be a bit temperamental.

Werewolf hair - A werewolf hair is best used in transfigurations and transformations, given the transforming nature of the werewolf.

WAND LENGTH

Wands often range in length from 7 inches to 16 inches, with increments in between of 1/4 and 1/2 inches. Length is mostly a matter of preference, although you will rarely see a 7-inch wand bond to someone who will grow to a large stature. Try to match wand lengths to student heights as best you can, and keep in mind most students will not have a 16 inch wand.

WAND FLEXIBILITY

The flexibility of a wand is generally a measurement of its willingness to work for its chosen Witch or Wizard. A witch with a whippy wand might learn spells faster than a wizard with a rigid wand, but the wizard with a rigid wand will have more spell strength once he finally masters it. Rigid and inflexible wands are the hardest to master, but dependent on their core and wood, can be the most powerful. There is also an element of material inherent- it is rare to find a whippy mahogany wand or a stiff reed wand.

Disclaimer: For the purposes of this roleplaying game, the city of Salem, Massachusetts and surrounding areas have been fictionalized. The mods are fully aware of slight, unrealistic discrepancies. They are intentional. No disrespect is intended.

The Salem Academy for Magical Edification is located deep in the woods just outside the picturesque tourist city of Salem, Massachusetts. Also known as the Witch City, Salem is located right on Massachusetts Bay. The area tends to be windy and mild in the Spring, hot and humid in the Summer, crisp and rainy in Autumn, and experiences heavy snowfall in the Winter. Salem Academy enjoys the proximity to a bustling port town while maintaining its secrecy.

The Salem Woods were bewitched by the school's founders. Any Muggle entering them soon loses the desire to explore much further into the forest and soon becomes overwhelmed by the urge to just go home and find something more fun to do. Local Muggles are aware of the existence of Salem Academy, but only in a vague sense and certainly not that it is a magical school. They believe, thanks to the rumors and false information leaked around town by various headmasters over the years, that Salem Academy is an exclusive private school and that students are hand-picked to attend. Because of the extensive spells employed to protect Salem Academy, local Muggles never try to get their own children enrolled.

Students of the Academy are allowed and even encouraged to form bonds and make friends with the local Muggle population, but no Muggles - with the exception of relatives of Muggle-born and half-blood students and staff - are allowed on campus. Anyone caught sneaking a Muggle on campus will face immediate expulsion and the Muggle in question will be Obliviated.

H. Lower Student Housing: Dormitories for Lower Academy [junior high school] students. Owlery located on the roof.

I. The Commons: Area located at the heart of the Salem Academy Campus. Students can gather to study, have club meetings, or just hang out with friends.

J. Quodpot Field: Field on which Quodpot matches are held. Also used for cheerleading and Quodpot practice.

1. Visitor Parking: Parking for visiting parents, families, and deliveries.

2. Student and Faculty Parking: Parking for students and faculty.

The houses aren't exactly the same as Hogwarts, though they are very similar. Note well: blood purity isn't much of an issue at Salem, thought if it were, purists wouldn't all be in Wardwell house. Salem was founded by people without the exact same the same ideals as Hogwarts founders, so these houses do not take into account blood status. This is why there is no question regarding blood status on the application. You are free to make characters who were raised to care about status, but they will be in the minority.

Note: your character does not have to have ALL the traits of one house, or even more than half of them. They must simply have more from whatever house they're in than any other. You can have a character with five traits from Osborn and four from Wardwell, which could make a very interesting character, if done well. You can even expand on how the smoke seemed to hover before making a decision, in a case such as that. Keep in mind some traits do contradict. It would be unlikely to have someone both selfless and self-preserving.

RULES

DRAMA
RP drama is inevitable. However, this doesn't mean disputes can't be handled civilly between players. If players are unable to end a dispute between themselves, they should contact the moderator at salemacademy dot mods at gmail dot com.

Individuals who start drama will only be given one warning before being dismissed from the game on the second offense. The same is true of those who are found to be participating in and/or encouraging drama. There will be no exceptions - drama will not be tolerated here.

You need to be 18 and over as there may be things here that the law finds unsuitable for minors. [This server is 18+ however, so if you're here on Inksome, you should already be over 18.] Don't apply if you can't deal with R or NC-17 ratings. If you're comfortable just scrolling past though, continue onward!

OOC/MARY SUES/GODMODDING
Players need to be sure they have a firm idea of their character's personality and the game's premise before applying. Likewise, players should make sure they're staying in character.

Mary Sues/Gary Stus and godmodding are also not allowed. If you don't know what we mean by this, please familiarize yourself with the terms.

Please note: your characters can be descended from prominent early settling families in America. They can be from islands in the Caribbean, Native American tribes, the Old South, any generation American from Europe, Africa, Asia: we don't mind. But they cannot be related to anyone from the Harry Potter novels. There is no reason to make your character Harry Potter's third cousin once-removed, or Draco Malfoy's illegitimate daughter. Yell bunnies! This also applies to all other fandoms: Supernatural, Buffy, Merlin, Hex, Dresden Files, etc. We want original characters, not ones who are related to Willow Rosenberg or Harry Dresden. Just don't do it please.

If any of the above is seen happening with a character, the player will receive two warnings before being removed from the game on the third offense.

SPELLING/GRAMMAR
Both spelling and grammar are important, so looking over your post before hitting submit never hurts. If you use Firefox, there should be a spellchecker already installed on your browser. With this, your browser will point out misspelled words as you type, à la Microsoft Word. This should successfully prevent a majority of spelling issues.

CHARACTER LIMIT
Players are allowed five characters maximum. Additionally, players cannot play two characters who would interact regularly. Players seeking additional characters must allow two weeks or two complete threads [whichever comes first] with the most recent character picked up, before applying for a new character, although an exception may be made for extremely active players. Please try to diversify your characters. Mods reserve the right to withhold granting another character if activity with previous ones is not up to par. Likewise, we reserve the right to ask you to drop one if you cannot keep up with activity.

ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS
Players are expected to post at least 1 thread or log every two weeks as well as keep up with replies to other characters and threads. Journal entries are not requirements, but they are encouraged. Activity in this game shouldn't suffer because of player involvement in other games. In other words, don't join if you don't think you'll have the time.

Activity checks will occur on the last Thursday of every month and a list will be put up on the OOC community listing journals that need to make a post or risk removal. Players who have not made a post or participated in a thread by the following Thursday will be removed. Characters who make this list two times in a row (or continuously meet the bare minimum to resist removal) may also be removed.

HIATUSES
Hiatuses are allowed for up to two weeks. A hiatus lasting for more than two weeks (as well as constant hiatuses) could result in your dismissal from the game. However, this will be dealt with case-by-case (constantly being busy with school is a lot different from not having access to a computer for a certain length of time). If a player needs additional time, some exceptions may be made.

SHIPPING
Slash, het, and femmeslash are all permitted. This is America, land of the free! NC-17 threads are also permitted, but must be clearly warned, and not be the sole purpose of your experience here. Bear in mind that if players seem to have joined solely for shipping purposes (and are disregarding other parts of the game for it) or are forcing certain ships on other players, they will only receive one warning before being dismissed from the game.

PBs
All PBs are eligible here. This is an American school, so we'd expect Muggle-influenced scene kids to be in attendance, but not in abundance. Please remember these are high school students between the ages of 14 and 18. Pick someone age appropriate. There will be no Jensen Ackles or Jared Padalecki students here. We still reserve the right to ask for a PB change. Also, there should be a suitable amount of clear icons for your character, without any text, preferably 100x100. Try here on Insanejournal for a list of icon makers of high-school appropriate icons.

PLOT
People should plot and play with multiple players and characters, not just one exclusively. Players should try to engage their characters with as many others as possible, even just for mere conversation. Even if your characters hate each other. This IS high school after all. There will be ~~blood~~ drama.

Major plots (death, rape, and pregnancy) should be run by the mod. Like we said, this is high school. We don't want girls getting pregnant willy-nilly just as much as your own high school administration didn't. Also, we shouldn't have to say it, but just in case: no m-preg. Boys do not have babies.

Secrets: We all have them. So do your characters. And no, not everyone is secretly gay. Be more creative. Why do we ask? This is a small school and there is a rumor mill. No, we were joking. Yell fire, not bunnies. Your secrets will come out, possibly as they are, possibly bastardized into something better or worse. You can feel free to have your character be a gossip monger.

JOURNALS
Please be sure to track the game via your friends page. There will be posts in character journals, in the OOC journals, and sometimes the mod journal that you might miss if you go directly to the community. Posts only stay on your f-list for two weeks, though, so if it's longer than that, you'll have to go to the individual journal or community to see something older.

Please DO NOT make your journal before you are accepted, unless you are planning to reuse an already created journal. When we accept your application, we'll send you an invite [if needed] to create a journal. This is why it's very beneficial to have a CDJ [character development journal] to write up your characters in.

Before RPing with someone, please make certain you have read their character bio. This means each character MUST have their bio posted, preferably as their first entry, and available for everyone to read BEFORE they start playing. DO NOT friends-lock your posts, unless it contains personal information you only wish to share with other players. This also means that all journals must be friends by all of your characters' journals.

Entries posted in journals are viewable to everyone - including staff - unless stated otherwise.

The houses aren't exactly the same as Hogwarts, though they are very similar. Note well: blood purity isn't much of an issue at Salem, thought if it were, purists wouldn't all be in Wardwell house. Salem was founded by people without the exact same the same ideals as Hogwarts founders, so these houses do not take into account blood status. This is why there is no question regarding blood status on the application. You are free to make characters who were raised to care about status, but they will be in the minority.

Note: your character does not have to have ALL the traits of one house, or even more than half of them. They must simply have more from whatever house they're in than any other. You can have a character with five traits from Osborn and four from Wardwell, which could make a very interesting character, if done well. You can even expand on how the smoke seemed to hover before making a decision, in a case such as that. Keep in mind some traits do contradict. It would be unlikely to have someone both selfless and self-preserving.

SORTING

Upper academy students at Salem are sorted at the very beginning of their freshman year by a kind of ritual magic that has been in effect since the school opened. One candle rests in the hall where students are sorted, between the banners of the four houses. Each student lights the candle, which produces a plume of smoke, and the smoke blows toward the house he or she is destined for. There is no way to influence the drifting of the smoke. The student then blows out the candle, and sits with his or her peers, leaving the candle unlit for the next student to repeat the process.

COURSES
REQUIRED
Astronomy: includes learning the names of stars, constellations and planets, as well as their location and movements, and describing the environments of planets and moons. Also studied is the influence of stellar and planetary alignment, as well as moon phases, on potion-brewing and spells.

Defense Against the Dark Arts: focuses on defensive techniques to block spells, charms, curses, hexes and jinxes cast by other wizards, counteract the Dark Arts, and to protect from dark magical beasts and creatures.

Herbology & Potions: the first half of the school year focuses on learning about various mundane and magical plants and herbs, and their uses in potions and Ritual Magic. The second half of the year is then delves into applying what was learned earlier to brewing various potions and draughts.

History of Magic & Muggles: examines the mutual influence Muggles and Wizarding folk have had on each other in a historical context.

Latin: required language course for all students as Latin is used in the casting and creating of the majority of spells.

Magical Biology: the study of various magical creatures from around the world, including their habitats, eating and breeding habits, as well as what to do when confronted with more dangerous creatures.

Ritual Magic: this course teaches students about magic that doesn't rely on waving a wand, but instead requires more patience and preparation. Candle magic, wards and seals, doll magic, etc. are just a few examples of what is taught. The course teaches a melting pot of magic from various cultures.

Transfiguration: explores the art of the art of changing the form and appearance of an object achieved through concentration, precise wand movements and the proper pronunciation of an incantation.

Wandwork: required for all students, this course involves learning specific wand movements and proper pronunciation. Often students are required to partner up in class to experiment on one another.

ELECTIVE: Unless otherwise stated, elective courses are open to all students.
Advanced Transfiguration [Animagi] ¤: this two-year course focuses exclusively on teaching students the difficult process of becoming an Animagus. Only juniors that are recommended can participate in this course. Limit to 10 juniors and 10 seniors. Seniors MUST have begun taking it junior year.

PREMISE

In 1693, the Salem Witch trials came to a gruesome conclusion with the arrest of over 150 people, 29 of whom were convicted, and at least 25 died. All had been accused of witchcraft. Most were hanged, some died in prison. Contrary to popular belief, none were actually burned. It was a sign to witches and wizards everywhere that the Muggle world was not prepared to deal with the presence of magic, of things they could neither control nor understand.

But Muggles knew nothing true, nothing real about witches. Few of the men and women killed had any magical ability at all, but it still served as a lesson. The true witches and wizards of pre-Revolutionary America retreated, hiding in the midst of those that had hunted them. Salem. Roanoke. Sleepy Hollow. All of them home to a hidden Wizarding culture. But the Salem witches and wizards were the ones who knew the best way to avoid a repetition of the past was to teach, to learn. So by the end of 1693, the Salem Academy of Magical Edification was founded, nestled and hidden within the Salem woods. Housing students from junior high up through high school, SAME followed in the footsteps of the magical schools that had come before it. Hogwarts. Beauxbatons. Durmstang. These schools already had long and successful careers. The founders of Salem Academy were determined to accomplish the same on the other side of the Atlantic.

Over four hundred years later, SAME is still matriculating. Some of its graduates in the past few decades left America to join the war in Europe, most to fight on the side of the Order of the Phoenix, and Dumbledore's Army. But most of the student body, and American witches and wizards in general, were left unscathed by war. Until now.

News of the war spread from country to country, and when the newest president of the United States was sworn in, the first thing he learned of was the existence of the American Bureau of Magic, and its leader, Daniel Burroughs. President Obama was clued into the biggest secret in American and world history: the presence of witches and wizards. But he isn't the only one who knows. There's a traitor in his cabinet, one who's uncovered information about the ABM and is spreading the word about magic to Muggles.

Right now, students at Salem Academy are still safe. No one has revealed the school's location, but that may be only a matter of time. The Muggles aren't happy, and history may repeat itself. And maybe this time, they will burn the witches.
