Arr, mateys! There be bounties afoot! [Aug. 8th, 2008|09:36 am]

Sorry, folks, random Talk Like A Pirate moment. :)

So [info]staff_jamie has several ideas about how to make Inksome a more attractive place for fannish types like many of us are here. And I think they're great ideas, and I'd love to have them all. There's just one problem - I don't have the time to implement them. I work a full-time job, and don't have a lot of free time in the evenings. My weekends invariably are busy. So rather than wait for me to take the time to do this, I am offering bounties on these features:

* Improved comment thread expansion, maybe customizable
* The ability to display the most recent comments or the most recently updated thread in a post.
* A primary/secondary account system such that one personal journal may be noted as being "owned" by another journal. The user on the primary journal should be able to update the primary journal and all secondary journals.
* Captchas for anonymous comments using ReCAPTCHA

I am also offering a bounty for fixing the b0rked styles; if you want to work on that, I'll provide you with a copy of the DB with all users/communities removed.

Bounty is one permanent account for each. I'm also willing to entertain suggestions for other features; please contact me at kpeters@inksome.com if you'd like to discuss it.

I will be putting up a public Subversion repository soon; you're responsible for setting up your own development environment. Code must be submitted as patches to the existing Inksome code and licensed under the GNU GPL v2 or later.

I have a friend who hand-codes her own S2 styles [not using pre-existing themes or layers] so I linked her here in hopes of her maybe being able to fix the broken styles. I don't know if she'll have time to help out but I gave it a shot. =D

As for everything else, I sadly don't know enough coding to try to help out on them. I'll keep my eyes open for people who might though!

Thank you. We'd also be interested in having your friend help us upload a new system style that someone from the DreamWidth list gave us.

LOVE the idea of the Primary/Secondary account statuses. That's very innovative. Not something we will find anywhere else.

So glad I switched over from LJ....

I don't really know how to code journal layouts, but I've fiddled with site scheme shells before and could possibly come up with something in that regard that might prove to be a bit more easy on the eyes. :)

So... like me with my personal writing communities, but less cluttered? That would be very nice.

Is a permanent account equivalent to early adopters/betas/early contributors?

Early Contributor/Early Adopter accounts get more userpics than perm accounts, actually. :)

So I have my friend working on things, but I decided to run a little test, and I've found out something:

There's nothing wrong with the raw source code for Bloggish here on Inksome. Here's how I came to this conclusion.

I put the current default Unstyled Bloggish on my journal here on Inksome. It looked like this. Then, I tried looking at the raw source code for it here. I copied it and pasted into a layer I created from scratch. I then put that new layer, with the SAME INKSOME Bloggish code on my journal here and it looked like this. This was compared to LJ's Unstyled Bloggish theme on my journal over there, which looks like this. Not exactly the same but close. Lastly, I took some CSS from a layout community here and put it in the customize area for the Bloggish layout I compiled myself here on Inksome, and got this result, which is exactly how that layout's supposed to look on LJ.

So this leads me to believe the styles themselves are not b0rked. In fact, there has to be something wrong in the S2 system itself affecting both Bloggish and Style Contest, since they are apparent pretty much the exact same code. I don't know what else to do with this information yet, but I though you all should be made aware.

At least it tells us somewhere to look. Thank you. :)

No problem! If I stumble onto anything else, I'll let you know. In the meantime, I'll be compiling my own Bloggish and Style Contest themes to use with CSS. =D
