Setting: New York City. Characters can travel anywhere, but the main focal point will be New York City.
Concept: It's 2020 and the world hasn't changed much in the last twelve years. With one major exception. In 2015, Valley Dynamics, a renowned global technological giant, developed bio-mechanical androids called NeohumansTM. They were hailed as a breakthrough in artificial intelligence and the next generation in computer technology, NeohumansTM became available to anyone who could afford them at the time. Five years later, the cost of buying a NeohumanTM is considerably less and they have become as common place as iPods. They work in nearly every service industry, can act as personal computers, and can even be programmed to be psuedo-love interests for the lonely.
Unknown to the public, around the same time that NeohumansTM were being developed, Valley Dynamics was also working on a more subtle version of bio-mechanical androids called Facsimiles that can blend seamlessly into the general population. Facsimiles were developed at first as a government-funded project, but Valley Dynamics has taken almost complete control of the project. The government only knows what Valley Dynamics wants them to know.
However, whether it be from outside influence or internal, NeohumansTM and Facsimiles alike are experiencing glitches in their programming. Only a small number of cases have occurred so far, just small things that Valley Dynamics have managed to take care of one way or another. But something bigger is coming and no one, not even those at Valley Dynamics, knows what it is, when it will happen, and least of all - why.
Civilians: Exactly what it sounds like. Normal human beings that are aware of Neohumans and their role in everyday life, but not aware of Facsimiles or the corporate and military entities responsible for their development.
Non-civilians: Anyone who works at Valley Dynamics or military/government personnel that works with Valley Dynamics employees. This means anyone that works for The Valley, whether they be a receptionist, a scientist, a corporate lawyer, or the guy who works in the cafeteria. All Valley Dynamics employees are required to sign non-disclosure agreements when they're hired. Breach of this contract results in immediate termination of employment. At the very least.
Not all Valley Dynamics employees are aware of the existence of Facsimiles. Any Valley employees working directly on the creation of NeohumansTM and Facsimiles work in the Synthetic Life Research and Development (SLRD) Department, which is located in underground labs five stories below the Valley Dynamics building located in Midtown Manhattan.
NeohumansTM: Bio-mechanical androids developed by Valley Dynamics, and sold commercially to serve a variety of purposes. They can do just about everything from waiting tables, to acting as a personal computer assistant, to simply being a companion. NeohumansTM are programmed with an artificial intelligence that has the ability to learn, but they don't have the capability to feel emotions. However, they can be programmed to have specific personality types for whatever purpose they're meant to serve. NeohumanTM physical appearances are fully customizable as well, depending on the owner's personal preferences. Their programming has a built-in failsafe that doesn't allow them to hurt humans, whether directly or indirectly. Any tampering with this failsafe will notify Valley Dynamics operatives immediately. Often called Neos for short as a group; individually referred to by name [ex. Bob] or Neo # [ex. Neo 654].
Facsimiles: Androids with more bio-mechanical complexity than NeohumansTM, also developed by Valley Dynamics. The Facsimile artificial intelligence programming doesn't allow for learning. They are instead programmed with specific directives whether it be for security, covert military operations, corporate espionage, or assassinations, though their uses are not limited to just that. Facsimiles are designed for infiltration and blend in with humans better than NeohumansTM. In fact, some Facsimiles, programmed to have false personalities and memories, aren't aware that they aren't human until their directive is activated either by a specific event or an internal clock. Often called Faxes for short as a group; individually they're referred to as Fax # [ex. Fax 321] or Fax name [ex. Jane].
