Physical description: Dong isn't your typical Korean. He stands about 5'6" and weighs over 100kg. His husky stature and extra fluff only makes him that much more adorable. With a wide smile and soft auburn eyes, Dong-Bae is sure to put almost anyone at ease with his facial expressions alone. He carries himself in a gentle manner with slower movements, but do not let that fool you. He is very strong and very agile thanks to his activities at SAME, and the work he tends to while at home in the garden with his mother. Dong's hair is usually kept long and bowl-cut, though on occasion, he is known to grow it longer and pull it into a topknot off his face. Dong is highly expressible, using plenty of hand motions and facial expressions to exaggerate his moods.
To go along with Dong's cheery personality, he prefers to wear colorful clothing, often disliking the rigid uniformity of the clothes he must wear while in class. When able to, he'll often try to add a new color or an accessory to liven up the beige and white drab, though his safest form of expression is through his hair. Kept straight or wavy or pulled back or entirely shaved, Dong just can't seem to stick to one hair style, ever willing to try highly ridiculous things just for laughs from himself and others. Jeans, colorful sneakers, and bow-ties are amongst Dong's favorite arsenal of garments.
PersonalityLikes: Food. All sorts of
food. Authentic Korean to artery-clogging American; if its edible, he'll consume it. He also enjoys
gardening, especially with his mother, to which he often uses and stores the vegetation they grow for his own uses.
Teas are also a favorite; Dong tends to his own tea leaves and prefers to converse over a piping hot cup of tea than anything else. Tea makes him calm, makes others calm, and he likes providing calmness to everyone!
Dancing and Hip-Hop/Pop music are more modern pleasures for him.
Quodpot!! Very fond of playing and watching Quodpot, since it is one thing he is very good at!
Dislikes: Despite having a big sweet tooth, Dong dislikes
chocolate, in any form.
Computers and other general technology. Why? He just simply wasn't brought up with it. And they always break easily. He's always asking Jin-Ho to fix some stupid contraption or another.
Quirks: Dong is always drinking tea. When he's attending class, he has a small thermostat that he brings with and will randomly pour a cup for himself, his lab partner, or anyone else that is genuinely interesting in trying out his latest blend (while clearly not paying attention to the goings-on of class). Dong is also very protective of his sister; as the first born son, it is Dong's responsibility to watch over all of his family when their father is not present, and he might come off as overprotective of his sister.
Secrets:
+ Wishes he wasn't the oldest, as he is terrified of having to follow the workings of his father one day and become a 'professional' when he'd much rather work in the garden and own a tea shop one day.
+ Where herbs can be used for tea, they can be used for smoking. Dong has a very small collection of dried herbs and crushed roots or beans for burning during his meditations, most of which are highly... 'enlightening'.
+ Prefers black or hispanic girls for relationships, much to the chagrin of both his twin and the rest of his family; though, since he hasn't actually ever been on a date, no one really knows this preference; and so, is a big virgin.
+ Very insecure of his weight, though is great at hiding this behind smiles and jokes and silly faces. However, sticks and stones may break his bones, but words are deeply taken to heart and bottled up.
Strengths: Understanding, Friendliness, Positive Attitude, Calmness, Patience, Herbology, Tea-Making, Loyalty, Reliability
Weaknesses: Tradition, Flying, Easily trusting of others, Sung-Hee, Pseudo-Naivety, Over-protective
Detailed Personality: Dong-Bae is perhaps one of the most gentle human beings you'll ever meet. Whether you know him or not, his first reaction to greeting anyone is usually with a massive smiler and a bigger hug. Although he is not he most talkative, he makes up for that by being highly observant to the words and thoughts of others. He tends to be over-polite in both verbal and physical mannerisms. When speaking in Korean, he rarely uses informal terms, especially to elders. He will be the first to open the door for anyone, not just females. Kind-hearted and a genuine desire to help others, Dong will also be the first person to give someone the food on his plate or the clothes off his back. He tries his best to never hold grudges, though does have a slight jealousy over his sisters intelligence level and her assertiveness.
The eldest Kyeong child is open to new ideas, new philosophies, new friends, and any orientations that the world has to offer. He reveres all forms of life with the highest regard, especially plant life. A trait, perhaps, passed down from his mother and shared with his sister, Dong has a strong connection with the earth, her children, and the magic that unites the two. Dong is very proud of this connection, which is why he feels most comfortable outside and rarely ever feels the emotions of being 'alone' or 'neglected'.
He is both humble and does his best to accept humiliation, though has a difficult time coping with his weight issues and those that point them out. He does not mind that he is appreciative of food, but he gets discouraged when physical activities and watching what he eats does not help a bit with his metabolism. He dealt with the humiliation during his childhood because of it, often being ridiculed by his own father, a well-trimmed man, along with classmates. Dong has, however, learned to cope with these negative thoughts, and does do a great job in hiding the fact that something troubles him so greatly.
Dong may come off as naive and innocent, but he holds much wisdom and understanding of the world around him thanks to his beliefs in Buddhism. It may appear that people walk over him, but for the most part, he simply lets it happen, not wanting to hinder the possibility of happiness for someone else, even if it is at his own expense. His personality varies greatly from that of his sisters, as well. Although they are both loyal, Dong-Bae is loyal to many, not just his family and those closest to him.
HistoryTucked away between larger apartment buildings is a smaller, three story complex. On the first floor is an ancient shop with wooden barrels and stands posted out front filled with various seeds, flowers, and bundles of sage dangling from the awning for muggle and magical traditions. The door to the shop, along with the windows, are almost always found open during business hours when the weather permits, allowing for potential patrons to observe an assortment of colorful roots, grains, seeds and various other herbs perfectly tended to hand-crafted pottery. This is where Dong-Bae and his twin spent much of their childhood, assisting their mother, Eun-ha, with various tasks of running the muggle/magic herb shoppe. It was a good business, having been constructed four generations ago and continuously passed down from Eun-ha's family line. Tae-Woo married into the the business, but had his own plans that involved occasionally time away from his family. Tae-Woo was a diplomat for Magic-Muggle trade and commerce. This left little Dong-Bae to step up as the patriarch of the family whenever Tae-Woo was not present.
On the second floor of the building is where the family resided. With enough American and Magical money to keep them sustained, the family remained humble, though took the time to reconstruct the inside to suit their large family with a bit of luxury. Their kitchen was large, their living room even larger, and Tae-Woo had his own study. At first, the twins had their own room, though a door had been constructed between them so they could always have a connection whenever they wanted. While Sung-Hee was usually stuck with chores in the upstairs, Dong-Bae had to keep the shoppe clean. The both grew up assisting their mother in various household tasks including cooking, and because of their location in Chinatown, they were both fluent in Korean and English, and both were tutored in Chinese. Their home always had a multitude of different herbs and oils burning in almost every room, especially their shrine room dedicated to worship and pay respects to their ancestors. Dong-Bae would often find himself in that room to meditate, always enjoying the feeling of the ancients around him.
Growing up, Dong did not have the opportunity to really enjoy his youth, not that his twin had it any better. There was plenty expected out of both of them. When the twins were old enough to attend school, they were not sent to the dangerous public schools, but would take public transportation in their neatly pressed uniforms to attend a private academy. Dong-Bae loved and hated school. He loved making friends, loved playing sports, and loved trying to lighten the mood of his twin who was very goal-oriented when it came to school, even at an early age. What he didn't like, though, was the ridicule he'd receive from his overweight status by both neighborhood kids and the other children from the academy. His sister was often the one sticking up for him when no one else would, since Dong was just too passive about conflicts. He received this ridicule from his father as well, which made things awkward at home.
What really eased Dong in his childhood woes was spending time on the third floor and the roof with his mother. The third floor was home to various muggle plants, as well and magical ones. The shoppe also had a section restricted to magical folk only, where exotic, dangerous, and enchanted plants could be purchased. The third floor had been turned into a magical greenhouse where the twins and their mother would tend daily to the gardens. Dong grew up loving the time spent learning about various plants, their anatomy, and the various uses that the plants could be applied to. It was in his youth that he truly started feeling a desire to become a brewmaster, often tending to his own corner of the garden where he was allowed to grow whatever he wanted, mostly various plants for tea leaves.
Magic was important to the family, as was muggle integration, and both children, were raised on understanding the separation, similarities, and beauties of both worlds. Dong-Bae and Sung-Hee were quickly enrolled into Salem Academy once they turned the appropriate age. Dong-Bae was very excited, as he had never been anywhere else but home, and would now have the opportunity to get a better feel and practice for magic.
The school proved to be one of the greatest things to ever happen to Dong. He was able to make real friends that understood the magical world, he could continue playing sports, and he enjoyed not having to do the daily chores at home. Dong excelled in earth-based magic, something that he always felt a connection to. School work itself wasn't a strong suit either. Where his twin excelled academically, Dong-Bae was more interested in meditation and playing with herbs than focusing on doing homework for transfiguration or any other classes for that matter. He often could be found staying after class with the herbology teacher to take extra lessons. Dong-Bae also participated in Quodpot. He tried out for the team the moment he was able to do so, and was placed as a center/nose guard, a pivotal position of utter defense. His larger size made him a great candidate for the spot, and he takes his defending role very seriously.
When Dong goes back home to his family during breaks, he feels even more grounded. He loves having all of those little sisters and brother climbing on him and is very family oriented when it comes to helping his mother take care of the little critters. Often they joke that he looks like a buddha when he's got two kids latched onto his leg, another on his neck, and dragging one by the arms. He dislikes having to say goodbye to his family when the breaks are over, but he is equally excited to be going back to school.
Dong-Bae is in his junior year of high school at the academy, and although his grades are still mediocre, he certainly feels as though he has learned much and has grown as a human being. With his sister to help keep him on the right track, and his ability to keep his sister calm under pressure, Dong is beginning to think about the future and what he wants to do with his life. He is tortured by the fact that his father desperately wants him to follow in his shoes, and although Dong is very good with diplomatic skills, he does not like politics, and would much rather open up a teashop of his own near his mother's store. He does his best to remain optimistic about the future, though, and strives to better himself, even if that eventually means succumbing to the traditional role he'll have to fill one day.
