The business of Gustav is frightening and sad for so many people right now. People are preparing all along the coast. To lose their homes, all their property, to lose their land and possibly be permanently displaced from their homes for the foreseeable future.
This is just what happened with Katrina, only last time we weren't prepared. Nobody realized until it was almost too late how BAD Katrina would be and the devastation and poor human conditions that followed were just a testiment to our inability to prepare for such a horrific event.
Now, though, with Gustav ready to make landfall along the Gulf Coast, I hope that people are realizing the most important part about this whole event, with Katrina and Gustav and our future as human beings.
We are killing the earth. 400,000 square feet of Arctic Sea have melted in the past thirty years and we've had an incredible 100% increase in the intensity and duration of hurricanes since the 1970's. The fact of the matter is that the United States is the NUMBER ONE CONTRIBUTOR to atmospheric pollutants causing global warming.
People, that means that we're killing the only place we have left.
Look at Katrina, look at Gustav and DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. Unless you want to face these disasters year after year after year until the coasts are uninhabitable and the United States succumbs to crowding caused by people moving inland, do something about it.
The devastation left in the wake of hurricanes that ravage the coastal towns is horrific, but it will only get worse unless we start to make changes. Real changes. One person buying "green" cleaners for their house will not save our planet. We're all living here, we're all responsible for the state that the planet is in. We will all die together if we don't make changes.
It seems like such a simple choice.
