ATTENTION

Welcome back, students! We hope you've enjoyed your holidays, and the beginning of the new school year. We also hope you're enjoying the shorter schedules and prospect of clubs to broaden your horizons. Sign-ups for the various clubs will begin on September 14th and last throughout the week.

We'd like to remind our sixth and seventh years about upcoming Quidditch tryouts next week, beginning on the 7th. The schedule is as follows:

  • Light Path tryouts - Monday, 4 PM on the Quidditch pitch

  • Grey Path tryouts - Wednesday, 4 PM on the Quidditch pitch

  • Dark Path tryouts - Friday, 4 PM on the Quidditch pitch

  • Decisions will be made at the end of each tryout.

I would like now to address the status of the danger in the woods around school. Please note that as we have not determined what the threat is that attacked our students last year, we are not lifting our words of caution. Until we have eradicated the threat, the woods are not safe. I have already heard news that at least one student entered the woods, and reported a strange phenomenon: what appears to be glowing white hand-prints on a number of trees. We have not determined whether this is merely a prank or perhaps something more serious. We ask you please to not conduct your own investigations into the matter. Professors will continue to investigate and determine what is happening within the Black Forest. As always, trips to Durmstadt are allowed and encouraged, but please do not wander about alone. Be sensible and be safe.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please address them to the headmistress's office.

Announcement made to staff and students.
    ATTENTION

It is my pleasure to announce the upcoming changes in curriculum and extracurricular at the Durmstrang Institute for the 2009-2010 school year. Students will be given a new more condensed schedule of classes, one which will leave them with a bit more time outside of the classroom. While the workload will not decrease, the shortened classes will give students more time to choose an extracurricular activity or several such activities to broaden their horizons as well as develop the body as surely as the mind.

The following new clubs and organizations will debut this school year to be moderated by professors and adjunct staff, and well as contain eighth year student leaders who are interested.

The Dueling Club: Whether a student is a combative magic major or not, all are welcome to join and learn basic dueling techniques, or hone a greater skill.
The Wizard's Chess Club: Strategy and wit combined will make a grand master at this game. Tournaments will be arranged with enough members.
The School Choir: Showcase your musical talents by singing the school praises.
The Linguistics Club: Students at Durmstrang speak a myriad languages, and there's no room in the curriculum to teach them. Come together with fellow students and learn the languages of your friends and peers.
The Archery and Fencing club: A well rounded wizard can defend him or herself with both magical and mundane means. Test your mettle here or learn skills passed down for centuries.
The Young Leaders Society: The best way for a student to learn how to make the right connections, and how to set themselves on a path of status and social prowess. If you plan to be someone, this is the club for you.

Club meeting schedules will be determined by the moderators based on the amount of interest garnered. Sign-ups for clubs will be announced in advance to give students time to plan how to arrange their schedules. Club participation is not mandatory, but is highly encouraged.

Any and all questions may be directed here to the Headmistress's office.

    To all students:

For those who are still unaware, there was an attack on two students during the holidays. These students are recovering now in the infirmary. I can only continue to stress, until we discover the source of these disturbances, students are reminded that roaming the grounds after dark is highly dangerous.

That aside, I hope everyone else had a pleasant break, and that the school year continues uninterrupted. Welcome back to classes.

Any and all questions may be directed here to the Headmistress's office.

Announcement made to staff and students.
    ATTENTION

Another animal was found attacked outside on school grounds this morning. Students are reminded and advised not to roam about the school grounds after dark. Not just on full moons. We have reason to believe this particular creature might not have been victim to a werewolf attack but rather something else. Spring time brings creatures out from winter slumbers. They hunger, and they hunt. Do not be so foolish as to become the victim of a creature that could be avoided. If you must go into the woods during the day, be certain that you are accompanied by at least one other person, preferably a professor or Domestic Care student.

Any and all questions may be directed here to the Headmistress's office.

    ATTENTION

You are certainly all well aware that the Black forest is no place for students. I do not expect to have to warn students away from the forest, unless they are accompanied by a professor. Erklings in particular present a danger, as they are particularly fond of luring children into the forests. This is something you should all know, as it has been taught in Care of Magical Creatures since Year One.

However, a larger and more pertinent threat lie with another creature whose home is in the woods: the werewolf. It has come to my attention that a Crup was recently wounded in the forest, and all signs point to a werewolf as the culprit. As the Crup was very near to the school grounds, I must warn you all to take heed and be careful. Do not roam the grounds at night. Do not approach the woods at all during full moons. Do not do anything that could make you a target rather than a creature who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Care of Magical Creatures professors will be continuing investigations as to the possible nearness and population of the werewolves in our vicinity. I reiterate: keep yourselves safe.

Any and all questions may be directed here to the Headmistress's office.

After much consideration, Durmstrang will be offering a duelling club for those interested students. This is a non lethal club.

Students will be arranged into mentor/student pairs and will duel with other students of similar ability and knowledge.

Eighth years are encouraged to join as mentors and will have first choice of students to mentor.

Sign up sheets are located on the door of the Combative Magic classroom.

Any questions may be directed towards the Combative Magic Professors or Professor Nordlund.

[OOC: Characters can sign up via this post. :-D ]

Announcement made to all students and staff
    ATTENTION

It is not customary for me to address every duel that occurs with these walls. Students duel to prove their worth, to uphold family honor, or accept a challenge. It it a frequent occurrence. However, it is less frequent that a student dies during a duel, and nearly unheard of when both do.

Yesterday seventh year Boyan Stamboliev and sixth year Petra Kronenberg were found, having both been killed during a duel. What led them to challenge each other is unknown, but we must consider their families now in their time of loss. Herr Stamboliev is survived by a brother, Petar Stamboliev, a Durmstrang graduate, and a sister, fourth year Radka Stambolieva. Fraulein Kronenberg is survived by her sister, eighth year Liesl Kronenberg, and her brother, fifth year Heinrich Kronenberg.

There are a number of families suffering losses which is not entirely unusual. We extend our sympathies to the Stamboliev and Kronenberg families and hope that they can recover from their loss.

Any and all questions may be directed here to the Headmistress's office.

Announcement to students and staff participating in gift-giving
    ATTENTION

Some people have been having a bit of trouble coming up with ideas for their giftees on the basis that they do not know each other very well. In cases like these, it's best suggested that one give tasteful but generic gifts that anyone can use.

    Elegant wand holders
    A unique quill set
A scarf, perhaps with matching gloves
Books regarding whichever subjects they are studying
A bag to carry school supplies
A gift certificate to a store or for a service in Durmstadt
    Wand polishing kit
    Broom polishing kit

I hope you find these suggestions helpful. If you'd like something more personal, but are still uncertain, feel free to speak to me.

Any and all questions may be directed here to the Headmistress's office.

    ATTENTION

Regarding our holiday gift exchange, all participants have been assigned. You should all have received owls with the names of the students - or professors - you have been matched with. Once again, if you have any difficulties in deciding on a proper gift, feel free to speak with myself, or friends of your giftee. You have until the start of break to exchange your gifts, by whatever means you choose: in person, by owl, etc.

Thank you all for participating and happy gift-giving!

Any and all questions may be directed here to the Headmistress's office.

[[OOC:Basically, that last part means comment here if your character has anything to say. By owls, of course we mean the mods have emailed you all your giftees. Mind you, you guys can take longer than two weeks to give gifts, so long as you backdate. All gifts need to be given by Friday 12th, if possible. Some students may by leaving before the weekend comes. Any questions, you know what to do!]]

Announcement made to all students and staff
    ATTENTION

In the weeks before our winter holidays, I thought it best to have a bit of holiday cheer throughout the school. To that end we'll be having a secret holiday gift exchange. Any students or staff interested will be asked to sign up here. Your names will be selected and matched at random to another student or professor's. Once you've signed up, you are committed to exchanging gifts. Do not neglect to do so, or some people will go giftless. That is hardly within the holiday spirit. So be certain that if you sign up, you will be able to follow through, regardless of whom you are matched with.

Please enter your names below, and it will be entered to be selected and matched within a few days' time. You may choose to exchange gifts however you wish [in person, by owl, etc] any time during the two weeks before break. If perchance you are uncertain of what to select, you may choose to speak to a friend of the person you've been matched to, or even speak with me for some suggestions.

I do hope everyone enjoys themselves.

    ~Headmistress Eberhardt

EDIT: Thank you all for your participation. Sign-ups are now closed. You will all be receiving your giftees shortly.

Any and all questions may be directed here to the Headmistress's office.

[[OOC:Basically, that last part means comment here if your character has anything to say. Each character will receive an owl with their giftee's full name, year, and path if applicable. We will be sending individual emails to you all so the secrets aren't spoiled!]]

Announcement made to all students and staff
    ATTENTION

    Dated: Thursday October 30, 2008

It is with heavy heart we extend our condolences to the Radomira family at this difficult time in their lives. Professor Viktorie Radomira was only with us at Durmstrang for a very short while, but that does not make her impact any less. She had been a fine student in her day, and was a fine professor.

There are rumors that have already begun to circulate, but the facts are these. In Physical Magic Integration class, Professor Radomira challenged her assistant, eighth year student Vincenc Reznik, to a duel. Herr Reznik accepted, as is befitting his station. While Herr Reznik has proven himself in many a duel before, including against last year's seventh year Combative Magic professor, this duel turned out unexpected.

During the duel, at a critical moment, Professor Radomira dropped her wand. We cannot know why she would, but it is certain she did so purposefully. Though it was hardly a proper duel in that case, Herr Reznik is not at any fault.

This leaves us with the dilemma of finding a new Combative Magic professor. Classes will be taught, until the end of the year, by our current sixth year Professor, Professor Odegaard**. Professor Oedegaard will be teaching both sixth and seventh year, effective immediately, with some assistance. Next year we will welcome a new sixth year professor, as Professor Odegaard has gracefully agreed to teach solely the seventh years then.

The Radomira family is suffering at this time, and it is inappropriate to perpetuate rumors or discuss opinions on the death of Professor Radomira in a way that shames the family name. Show respect both for a life lost in combat, and for the victor of a duel. If anyone has questions or concerns, you may address them to me, and not to either Herr Reznik or Professor Radomira's sister, Fraulein Judita Radomira.

Any and all questions may be directed here to the Headmistress's office.
