Who: Aila Kuuluvainan, OPEN
What: Aila is bored, and in need of friends
When: Early evening
Where: Library
Rating: PG-13

Aila felt like such a loser. The holiday break was over and here she was, studying once more. To be perfectly honest, she hadn't actually stopped. It was in her bones, and she wanted to excel in all that she did. However, finding herself in the library yet again on a beautiful day was making her feel a bit... lonely. Sure, she had a few acquaintances. But she was no Sirja... it was quite depressing to realize her sister was better at something than she was.

Taking a deep breath, she shut her Arithmancy book (which she really didn't need to study) and looked about the room. Tired of dallying about in the library, she stood and slung her pack onto her back. As it was not shut, and she was paying little attention, a book flew out and smacked into someone. Damn!

The library was always a place of refuge. Taavi could bury himself in books, killing time until he had someplace else he needed to be. It helped him to avoid people or situations he didn't have the stomach for. Much like he hadn't really had the stomach for dinner. That alone was sign enough something was bothering him.

An advanced Herbology book under his arm, page marked at the beginning of a chapter on medicinal uses, he made his way toward a table...just in time to see a book go flying and hit a fifth year. The fifth year stumbled and Taavi drew his wand, rushes toward him with the instincts of a healer. The boy wasn't much hurt, though he did throw a dagger glare at a nearby sixth year before leaving. Taavi picked up the book and realized who the sixth year was.

He smiled slightly, immediately choosing to speak in Finnish rather than German. "Good evening," he greeted Aila Kuuluvainen. He knew her and her twin Sirja. In years prior they been in classes together, but when sixth year rolled around, they'd all wound up choosing different majors, and different paths. "You're a little dangerous with this thing, you know," he teased, handing it back to her.

Her face was completely crimson, and she bit her lip with embarrassment as she accepted the book. "Sorry," she called after the smaller boy, wincing as he left.

"I am such a smooth operator," she replied in Finnish as well, rolling her eyes. "Thanks. How've you been?"

Taavi did something that passed for a laugh, and responded truthfully, "I've been better. Trying to get back into the swing of things I guess. How were your holidays?" He didn't really want to ask - it meant he'd ask about his in reply, and he didn't much want to think about it. But it was a conversational gambit that it would have seemed odd to avoid.

He noticed her bag on her shoulder and added, "Oh, were you leaving?" He didn't intend to keep her if she had someplace else to go. He himself would have to go off to Quidditch practice later anyway, so he couldn't stay long. But he could definitely use a distraction.

She shrugged. "I don't have anywhere in particular to go, but I grew bored with the library," she said, shrugging her bag off as she sat once more.

"Holidays sucked. And you?" she asked, pointing out the chair across from her.

Taavi took that as an invitation and sat across from her. "Mine were...eventful." He wasn't sure what else to say about it really. He bit his lip in memory, trying not to think about New Year's or about the Christmas gift from Vincenc still on his right ring finger. He was tempted to charm it invisible anyway. What did it matter now that Vincenc was engaged?

He cleared his throat. "I guess I'm glad they're over. Were you in Helsinki for New Year's? I didn't get to see the fireworks this year."

She shook her head, leaning forward and folding her hands over her knees. "No, though I did think about going. It seemed a good idea at first, but... well... we all know that I can't handle large crowds," she said, shrugging.

She knew better than to press the issue of the holidays, as it seems a bit of a touchy subject. "Do you talk to Sirja much?" she asked to change the topic.

Taavi nodded. Aila wasn't one for big parties. It didn't surprise him that she hadn't attending some big soiree. He wondered if her sister had, and like a interesting coincidence, Aila switched the topic to Sirja.

Taavi shook his head. "Not very much this school year. Except during Quidditch practice." They were both Chasers, for opposing teams, and so it lent an interesting dynamic to their interactions. "I guess we've all gotten kind of busy this year." And grown apart some as well.

She nodded, voicing what he didn't. "It seems that we're all drifting apart," she said, looking down at her clasped hands. "I suppose it's only natural... we are becoming adults now."

How she hated that word. It only meant more responsibility. And while she loved being able to fend for herself, she hated to see how others would do in the "real world". "Have you been enjoying yourself though?" she asked.

"Awful, isn't it?" Taavi replied, his words a bit of a tease about the horrors of becoming a full-fledged adult. He was only about a month away from being considered of age. It was starting to hit him how things were really changing.

He hesitated at her question, entirely unwilling to delve into anything that had been going on. "Some days have been better than others," he replied. He followed her gaze down to her hands, and shifted wondering if he should look through books on Ancient Runes to try to figure out exactly what the ring said. And maybe how to get it off. According to what Sasha Vladimirovich had said at the New Year's party though, it wouldn't be easy, if at all possible unless someone else did it. Taavi knew Vincenc was the only one who could take it off.

He sighed. "It's funny how something can change in the blink of an eye. Have you ever had something change, something you should be really glad has changed in that way, and yet you're not? And you don't really know why?"

She nodded, biting her lip. "Somewhat, but probably not as drastic as what is happening to you, I imagine. However, it's not my place to ask..." she said, shrugging.

"You know you can talk to me if you need to. You know I am a silent person at best, and a good listener at worst," she said with a small smile.

Taavi froze for a moment, looking a bit like a deer caught startled by sudden bright lights. "Well, no it not like it's really something drastic. Just kind of an observation, really..." That was a lie, outright, and Taavi was never good at those. He didn't think Aila actually knew anything about what was going on with him. Most of his close friends had noticed a change in his personality, and he'd tried to shrug it off as something unimportant that occurred over break. What he'd said to Aila was the most he'd alluded to something being wrong since New Year's.

Taavi offered her a smile. "I know. And if I had something I wanted to talk about, I know I could talk to you." Aila was nice, always seemed so sweet to Taavi. He wondered for a moment if he should say anything, and then thought better of it. The fewer people who knew what he'd gotten involved with, the better.

She nodded, understanding. "Well, the offer stands. Whenever you need to talk, I will be there for you," she said, smiling warmly. She had always liked Taavi, and wanted to be closer friends than they actually were. But sometimes, people needed their secrets. She just hoped that someday, and soon, he would tell someone what was bothering him.

Taavi nodded, his smile genuine. "I'll remember that, thank you." He shifted, both his position and the topic. "So, have you met anyone new lately?" Taavi knew it wasn't as easy for Aila to make friends as it was for him. She was much more introverted, and usually Sirja did more of the talking. He wondered how well they were getting along now they were taking separate paths and not spending as much time together. He'd seen Sirja even less than Aila lately, and he realized, a bit to his shame, that he had little to no idea what was going on with either of them.

She chuckled softly. "I did meet one girl, but I don't think we'll be braiding each other's hair anytime soon," she said, shaking her head. "I really am very clumsy, did you know?"

Of course he knew... she had been her entire life. Grace was definitely not a trait she possessed.

Taavi laughed in response. He reached out impulsively and squeezed Aila's hand. "Yes I know. But it's okay, I still like you anyway." He tilted his head, blond hair slipping down over one shoulder. 'Who was she? Nothing bad happened, did it?" He hoped not. It was far to easy to get on the wrong side of some people at Durmstrang, and Taavi hoped that hadn't happened to Aila.

"Her name is Erika, and I am sure she viewed it as bad. I accidentally knocked into her, making her spill her tea all over herself. What's worse is I tried to make it look as if it were her fault," she said, rolling her eyes and squeezing Taavi's hand in return. She hated how anti-social she was.

The name didn't ring a bell for Taavi, but that didn't really matter. Aila didn't look too upset about the incident, so Taavi assumed it hadn't gotten out of hand. He smiled in sympathy. "It was only an accident. I'm sure she'll forget about it. If she hasn't already."

The two girls looked absolutely nothing alike, but Taavi suddenly realized why he had felt a rather immediate kinship with Katarina Yurkovic when the first met. The Light path girl reminded him quite a bit of Aila. True Kata was more outgoing, but they both had the same propensity for quiet study indoors rather than large gatherings with groups of friends. And there was the fact that they were both one of a set of twins.

"Aila, do you know Katarina Yurkovic? Sixth year, Light path. She's in Domestic Care."

Aila's brows furrowed at the name as she studied her memory for a clue as to whom he referred. The name sounded familiar, but she didn't believe they had been introduced.

"I know of her, but we've never met," she said, arching her brows in curiosity. "Why do you ask?"

Taavi seemed to have something up his sleeve, but she was willing to find out what it was before running in fear.

"Because the more I think about it, the more I think the two of you would get along. She's actually one of a set of twins too, but she has a brother, Kristof. He's a Light Path as well. But she likes the quiet, likes studying, likes books, like you do. Maybe I can introduce you?"

Taavi wasn't going to push or insist, but he really thought Aila needed to make some more friends. Katarina might be a good person for her. The other girl was quiet, but still sociable, so she might connect well to Aila. At least Taavi hoped so. And if Vasili Borisenko had in fact broken up with Kata over break like Taavi wondered, Kata might have someone - another girl - to be able to talk to. Because as close and Kata and Kristof were, Taavi didn't think Kristof would be so good at comforting his sister in that particular case.

Aila bit her lip, as was her habit, as she considered what Taavi suggested. True, she was a loner. But she didn't like the feeling of having little to no friends. So in the end, she decided it would be a good idea.

"Alright. I think she sounds great. When could you introduce us?" she asked, her eyes twinkling with excitement despite herself.

Taavi beamed. "I'll find out when she's got a minute. She's pretty much got the same schedule as me - she's on Quidditch too - but she 's really hard to pull away from her books sometimes. Sound familiar?" Taavi couldn't help laughing just a bit at their similarities. "But I'll try to get us together for lunch or dinner sometime. Is that all right?"

"That sounds nice. Thanks, Taavi. It means a lot that you're looking out for me," she said, squeezing his hand before standing. "I should go, though. I bet you didn't come in here to strike up a conversation." She winked.

"You're welcome," Taavi smiled and then chuckled at her next statement. "Not exactly. But it was really good talking to you Aila. I'll send you a message soon when we can all meet up, ok?" He squeezed her hand in returned and stood as she did. He'd killed quite a bit of time talking to her, and he would have to leave for Quidditch soon enough.

She leaned in and kissed his cheek softly before collecting her bag once more. "That would be great. Have a good time at practice," she said before turning to leave, waving over her shoulder as she did.

The kiss, though it was nothing more than a peck, was a bit of a surprise, and Taavi could feel himself growing just a bit pink. He waved as she left, catching the looks of a few other students nearby. Flushing a bit more, he gathered up his books, and left only a few moments after Aila. It was almost time for Quidditch. He might as well head to the pitches now.
