Hate is a strong word, but I mean it.
Characters: Charlotte Wesley and Zack Wesley
Setting: Friday in the Library, after classes.
Content: Wicked half-sister alert. PG-13 for language
Summary: Charlotte somehow finds herself in the library, then sees Zack and decides trying to make him cry is a better use of her time.

Lottie Wesley was not happy. Her teachers had been riding her about her work, or rather her lack of work, and had told her if she wanted to be able to move to the Upper Academy this fall she had to step it up. Which explained why she was in Salem Academy's Library on a Friday afternoon. It wasn't that she was dumb, far from it really, it's just that she had better things to do with her time.

Sighing loudly Charlotte walked into the Library, which earned her a glare from the Librarian, but whatever, it's not like she cared what the old bat thought. As she made her way back past the tables, she saw her brother.

Grinning evilly, she stopped and sat next to Zack. "Hey Zacky. Why are you all alone? Did your boyfriend get bored with you?" She asked, sounding sickly sweet.

Now this was a good use of her time.

Zack rather enjoyed the Library, especially on a Friday afternoon. That was when it was most quiet, and he could sit by himself and really submerge in books. This particular afternoon, he'd gotten a Muggle novel off the shelves - it was chosen at complete random, which is what he enjoyed doing sometimes - and was busy reading it.

When... a voice that made him cringe inside interrupted. He looked up, hoping he was wrong. But nope, he just had to be right... He gave Charlotte a weak smile. "Hey Charlotte..." the sickening sweetness in her voice made an 'uh-oh' warning bell go off in his head. He decided to ignore her question, and replied with one of his own. "Why are you in the library anyways?"

Charlotte scoffed at Zack's question. "Well, if I was to take a flying leap and guess, I'd say I was here to get a book, wouldn't you? That's what the Library's for." She said in a mocking voice. It wasn't her best comeback ever, but it would work. And it wasn't like Charlotte was going to tell him that she had to play catch-up to be able to start high school in the fall.

"What are you reading?" Charlotte reached over and took the book from Zack, it was probably another one of his lame little muggle books. Really, would it be so hard to pretend to be a Wesley?

More than likely, Charlotte was being forced into going to the library for one reason or other. Not that Zack was going to question. He let her comeback roll off his back. When she asked him what he was reading, he almost didn't want to say.

She was definitely going to find something wrong with this one as well...

"The Great Gatsby..." he said slowly, eying her cautiously. She couldn't possibly be interested in his book, so there must've been another reason for asking.

Charlotte sat still for a minute, partially in shock. He made this so easy. It was almost to easy, but if she felt a twinge of guilt, she brushed it off with the ease of someone who had years of practice.

"The Great Gatsby?" She asked in her the tone of voice that she saved just for him. It was a mix of scorn, disgust, and repulsion. Which is exactly how she looked at him. "Isn't that a book that most muggles don't even want to read? How sad are you that you're reading a book that's so muggle, that even the muggles don't want to read it?"

Her day was looking up.

Yeah. There it was. The taunting, and the disgust. Zack really didn't understand what he ever did to offend and upset Charlotte like that. It just kind of happened. Like, he was born with the purpose of pissing Charlotte Wesley off.

He blinked at Charlotte. "It must be pretty famous if you know about it, and knew it was a Muggle book." I mean... it wasn't like Charlotte read. Ever. Or even knew what books looked like.

But he wasn't going to say that. Zack was going to keep civil. Because... um... because he had no balls, really. And he really didn't want to start a fight with Charlotte.

Charlotte was pretty sure that Zack had been born to piss her off. He had ruined everything when he showed up. And Charlotte wasn't exactly the 'forgive and forget' type.

She glared at him. "Are you calling me stupid?" She asked venously. Zack was really asking for it now. Who said that he could talk to her like that? She did the talking down here, thank you very much. "We do have tons of classes when I could've figured that out. Plus you're the one who's reading it, so it has to be a muggle book."

"I... didn't mean." Zack was really tempted to scoot his chair back a few feet. Either that or bolt the door. "I just... meant that, you know, you're not big on Muggle books." He paused. Okay. Yeah. Charlotte mad? So not the way to go.

This was why he never tried to pick fights with her. Because Charlotte Wesley is scary.

He was scared now, Lottie was pleased to note. He really was the most spineless person she had ever met. "That's because they are a waste of space." She said idly, leaning back in her seat and making a show of checking her nails. "Just, like, you." She leaned closer with every word, until her face was inches from her's.

Then she leaned away and flicked him in between the eyes in one swift movement.

Zack wasn't spineless. He was just a pacifist. There was a difference. Kind of. Jace told him to grow a pair a lot, but... it was better than being someone like Charlotte or Alan or Clifford anyways.

He jumped a little as she flicked in between his eyes. Really, this being nice thing? Was hard work and very tiring. But it was better than having an angry Charlotte who was likely to come and kill him while he was asleep.

Actually, she wouldn't kill him. She'd just torture him until he killed himself. That was a more Charlotte thing to do. He forced a smile onto his face at Charlotte. Just... be... nice...

"Was there a book you were looking for?" Man, being nice was a lot harder than he thought it would. "I could help you find it."

Charlotte was more than a little taken aback when Zack offered to help her find a book. She felt the familiar stirring of guilt in her stomach. Charlotte hated when he was nice to her, it knocked her off balance. Deep down, way way deep down, Charlotte knew that Zack didn't deserve to be treated the way she did, that he'd had a sucky life and still didn't let that define who he was.

But, she couldn't make herself do the right thing. She needed someone to blame, and Zack worked.

So, she pushed the guilt away for the billionth time and just glared at him. "As if I'd ever need your help in anything." She finally said, but the venom was slightly lacking this time.

Zack understood Charlotte's life hadn't been perfect. Hell, he'd lived with her family for a good 5 years now, and nobody could possibly be happy in that household. But it still hurt when she attacked him. But he was set on not fighting back. Because... Zack was Zack, and he hated conflict more than anything else in the world. If it made her happy to pick on him? That'd be okay...

"I know," he said softly, giving Charlotte a smile that was a little more genuine this time. "But I'm such a dork I think I know this library like the back of my hand now."

The guilt was back. But this time it brought friends. Charlotte had to step up her game or she might be nice to him accidentally. At the thought of being nice to Zack, Charlotte had to fight back the urge to hit someone. Or throw up. That wouldn't do at all. Time to bring in the big guns.

Charlotte leaned over to Zack and smiled sweetly. "If your own mother had to kill herself to get away from you, what makes you think that I'd be able to stick around here with out wanting to jump off some high-rise, myself"? She whispered.

There. That's better.

Zack stopped. Literally stopped. He wouldn't have been surprised if he'd just dropped dead right then.

Trust Charlotte to use that against him... He managed a weak, almost automatic, smile. "Y-yeah..." he said, feeling absolutely dejected. He didn't really have an answer for that.

At the look on Zack's face, Charlotte knew her work here was done. He tried to cover it up, but by now Charlotte could tell when she had hurt Zack the most. "Well, I better go then. Before I feel the sudden urge to throw myself off a cliff or something." She said standing up. "Bye, Zacky. Have fun reading your muggle book."
