Ares and Persephone: Don't expect me to be your messenger
Who: Ares and Persephone
What: Ares attempts to recruit Persephone, and get her to convince Hades to support him, too
Where: Fields of Enna
When: At some point during the summer months, after his attempt to recruit Hades proved less than successful, after he's gathered Eris, Aphrodite, his sons, Hebe, Poseidon, and more.
Rating: PG-13 thus far (neck-grabbing, hair-pulling, and Ares suggesting that Sephy sex Hades up to get him to go along with his little coup)
Status: Complete

The fields of Enna were hot, sultry, a perfect picture of spring-turning-to-summer, as a sweet breeze played on them, rustling the leaves of the trees. A few puffy white clouds dotted the clear blue sky as the nymphs danced below, laughing, keeping the Stygnian Queen company. A jaunty tune filled the air as the goddess moved, flowers woven into her tresses -- larkspur and crocus, on this particular day.

"And, jump on the eighth step," she said, instructing as she did, "and turn, once, twice, three times." The nymphs continued to laugh as they danced, enjoying the bold, even risqué dance, feet flying out as they spun. She paused, and they looked at her, mid-step. "Continue," she said, walking a few steps and leaning up against a tree trunk, her brows knitting together as her dark hair and violet chiton and himation waved in the wind.

She sensed something different in the air, even as the nymphs danced to the song. The breeze was different, the draft itself was different. The scent was different, a faint waft of something distinct in it. She closed her eyes. Blood. War. Battlelust. She opened them, glancing at the dancing nymphs as she waited for the inevitable.

Ares had been gathering his forces. They would take down Zeus and he would show his father just who should rule and how ruling should be done. He had gotten the help of Cronus and the titans and had recruited Eris, Deimos, Phobos, Aphrodite, Eros, Anteros, Hebe and Poseidon, who had promised the help of all the seas. With Eris sewing strife everywhere among the gods he was hearing the discontent with the rest of them. Already the seeds of doubt had been planted in Hera's mind, it was only a matter of time. He had only been dismissed by Hades but the rest of his recruiting was going well. He had powerful allies on his side but he needed the help of the king of the underworld. He did not want to go to him again, though, he did not want to ask again until he was sure he would get the answer that he wanted. Ares was a proud god, this whole conflict would not have started if he was not proud, he did not take rejection easily.

He set down his chariot close to where the nymphs were dancing and instructed the horses to be quiet so they would not startle them or alert them of their presense. He approached and looked on, finding that he was almost mesmerized by the dance the striking queen of the underworld was practicing with them. He waited a few minutes before starting to walk again when he saw her stop dancing and lean against a tree. It was easy for him to stay unseen, he was practiced in camouflage from the trenches of many battles fought hard, he was also quick. He was next to her in a second, his golden armor glinting in the sunlight when he was upon her.

"Persephone," he said when he reached her. "Can I have a minute?"

Near-silence filled the air, the music having stopped, as the Fruitbearing Goddess looked at her Warmongering half-brother inquiringly, out of place in his shining armor, battleworn, amidst the flowers and fronds, music and dancing nymphs. She almost knew what he wanted in that moment. Almost. She'd been to Olympus several times since the announcement that had sent the realm into turmoil, had been there, in fact, when the whole thing had transpired, as luck would have it, but she'd never committed to anything about it, had never answered any questions one way or the other about what might transpire in the lands beneath. Letting them reach their own conclusions, she'd decided long ago, was the simplest way to let things run their course.

"Manslaughtering Ares," she said, drawing out the syllables almost regally, raising a dark brow at him, "you are a bold usurper." She turned to the nymphs, who were looking on intently, particularly focused on the brazen, raven-haired War God, some already whispering to others and giggling softly at the sight of the manly deity in their midst, handsome and huge in his armor.

"My poor ladies should not hear you. Carry on," she instructed them, with a wave, a formal excuse to leave and talk to him privately -- nymphs had a way of talking too much and repeating what ought not be repeated -- before turning to the God of War again.

"Let us walk," she said, gesturing away from the crowd, "so that what is said shall not reach other ears. What is it that brings you here?" she asked, a question she was almost certain to which she already knew the answer.

Ares walked with her and waited until they were far enough not to be heard before taking her soft hand in his large, strong one and kissing it, in the way someone asking something from a queen would but with an almost prurient and flattering manner, his eyes scanned over her form. The queen of the underworld was a flower among flowers, she would not be able to say no to him, he thought. No one else had after all, except Hades.

"I need your help," he said as he held her hand for a minute, then he put his arm around her shoulders and lead her as they walked. "Sweet, fair Persephone, father has wronged you before. I am gathering forces, and we will bring him down. I can make things right if you give me your support," he pleaded. "Who will you side with?"

Persephone looked at him skeptically, not stiffening despite her lack of comfort in the situation, appearing, withal, unruffled.

"There have been previous attempts at our father's throne, if I recall correctly, none of which have come to fruitful ends," she remarked, matter-of-factly, ignoring the unpleasant feel of the hands that had slain many, the proximity of the cold armor that had seen countless battles. She let pass the mention of Zeus having wronged her, deciding that statement could be dealt with later. Instead, she focused on his next statement and ceased walking, a shrewd attempt to turn the tables and gain control of the situation.

"Promises are easy," she said smoothly.

Ares looked at her and nodded. "Yes, thats true. But this is different. I've gotten together a lot of the gods. Even now Eris is sewing discord among them and more will join me. Eris, Aphrodite, Deimos, Phobos, Eros, Anteros, Hebe, Cronus and the titans are all on my side. Poseidon is also with us and he has pledged the help of all in his realm. We have more forces this time and are stronger than ever. You..." He paused and his eyes swept over her again "...and Hades would be wise to join us."

The Stygian Queen pulled her hand away, likewise removing his arm from around her, annoyed and unafraid to show her displeased irritation, arms crossed as she narrowed her dark eyes at him.

"If you want his help, go to him. I am his Queen, not your messenger," she said, voice arctic, cold enough to make the shades in the world beneath shake. Her tone became questioning, and her gaze remained on him, scrutinizing, assertive.

"And who says Zeus has done something to wrong me? What if he has not? You presume much, Ares."

Ares had started to get impatient. He was short tempered, irascible and not used to getting turned down. "I presume because it is obvious," he said. His voice firmed as he towered over her.

"Aren't you afraid?" he asked. He grabbed her neck with his large hand and stepped near. Ares enjoyed making others feel fear and he wanted to see it in her eyes. His fierce and untame nature were taking over as she questioned him and turned him away. He expected her to be an easy ally. But if she wanted he could persuade her in other ways as well. Only Hades had turned him down before and he was not going to get turned down by his little wife as well.

[ooc: LMAO! Little wife! I just had a Beauty and the Beast moment!]

A small chuckle escaped her lips, even as his hand was uncomfortable against her skin. The wind blew arctically around them, leaves of the trees rustling in it. She reached for his wrist, taking it in her cold hand, holding on tightly, squeezing it, her long nails digging into his flesh.

"I am my father's daughter, and Aidoneus' wife, and I am not afraid of anything," she spat, defiantly, as her other hand reached up, grabbing his hair and pulling back, hard.

"Now release your hold, Lord of War, before I send the Erinyes after you, for your filial betrayal and impiety." And tell Hades and let him deal with you as he sees fit went unsaid, but was very clearly implied in the Iron Queen's tone. She released her hold of his hair after a brief moment.

"If you want my assistance, and his, that is not the way to go about getting it," she added, very matter-of-factly, a sharp contrast to her previous words.

[OOC: LOL! I didn't even think of that! Ares just doesn't want to take no for an answer, which works with that motif really well now that I think about it]

Ares was surprised at her laughter and defiance, he was used to others being intimidated by him and he was not sure how to react to her. Her nerve and spirit made his unpredictable, hard to govern mood shift, it was not something he would have expected from her. He let go of her neck and pulled his arm away from her tight grip. Her fingernails had drawn blood, the scent excited him. He stared at her and thought about her last words.

"Hades was dismissive. I do not think he thinks I am serious about this." He looked at her carefully. "But perhaps you could convince him." He took a step close to her, dropped his voice and stood behind her, his lips were close to her ear. His hand went to her hip as he hovered close.

"There has to be something Father has done that makes you unhappy, there has to be something you would change if you could. If you support me and get Hades to support me as well, it can be yours," he promised. "Women can be very convincing when they want too," he said. "Look at Aphrodite with the Trojan War. I was going to support the Greeks and she convinced me to change my mind," He said, he libidinusly put his hand on her shoulder and let his fingers work over it and grace over her coller bone. "Look at Hera, she effected Zeus during the same conflict with her feminine wiles. If you side with me, and get Hades to, when this is all over, I will set you free, give you whatever you like."

[ooc: It does! And he is boorish, but then, so is most of the grecoroman mythology ;) btw, I was amused by Ares' suggestion -- Persephone, on the other hand, was not! *gigglefit*]

Wait. Was he suggesting that she sex Hades up to get him to go along with this elaborate little coup d'état? The nerve!

A deceptive hint of a smile at her lips, the Iron Queen turned toward him slowly, her face just inches from his. Her long fingers danced over his, for a moment, then they closed in around his hand, grabbing it firmly and removing it from her shoulder, though she did not let it go.

"I am unconvinced myself, Ares," she remarked, squeezing his fingers in her hand tightly, a cold grip of death, to make her point, her voice cold again as she spoke, eyes narrowing at him, tired of his little games, his volatility. "I am not Aphrodite, and I am not Hera. We all make our own decisions. I am not going to plead your case for you before him. It's not my place." If it was a matter of handing out punishments, or deciding whether they should let someone out of the Underworld, then fine, her two obols were merited, but this was different. She dropped her own voice and let go of his hand, her dark eyes meeting his evenly.

"If he wants to choose, then let him do so of his own volition, through no trickery, just as he allowed me to make my choice," she said, "though other officious meddlers have interfered with it. He was the first person to ever let me make a choice, let me make my own decision, who let me stand strong and treated me as an equal." She paused as she thought on Hades, a dark, deep desire she'd never shared threatening to surface as she dared consider the possibility of what she'd come to yearn for so many centuries. It took each ounce of self-control she had not to grab onto his armor, not to plead in a most unpersephonic fashion Do not make me come back here every six months; let me stay with him, and I'll do whatever you like! That would have been undignified, conduct not befitting a Queen, not characteristic of her, but then, such were the depths of things that Hades made her feel. Instead, she raised a dark brow as the looked at the War God. Her voice was matter-of-fact.

"And after your glorious coup -- what then?"

[OOC: He is very boorish! Your right about that Ares amuses me from time to time, I think he was borderline amused by her reaction, lol]

He was driven by a need to show his father how many people he could get behind him. He could be king. He could be a better king than even Zeus. He needed the support of Hades though and Persephone was proving herself to be harder to manage than he would have thought.

Her grip again was stronger than he would have expected and it took him by surprise, the way she met his eyes also surprised him, her whole reaction surprised him, so did her words. If the situation was different he would have been amused to see this side of her. "I am sorry. I did not intend to imply..." he said as he flexed his fingers, he was thinking about what she just said and when he realized the meaning of her words he backtracked, that surprised him more than anything, what she was saying would have surprised anyone who had been making the same assumptions since her abduction. "I did not intend to make you upset." He went to place his hand on her shoulder but decided not too as he flexed his fingers again. He did not want to upset her, if she was like that then he did not want to think what Hades might be like. He hoped she would not tell him all the details of what had just happened.

"Think about what you really want, Persephone. There will not be officious meddling under my rule. I promise you."

[LMFAO @ your icon!]

The Ruling Goddess let out a soft, short chuckle. "I am not even close to upset, Ares. Trust me," she said, with a near-smirk.

"But promises are easy," she remarked again, almost dismissively, taking a flower from her tresses and letting it go in the breeze, watching it dance and spin, petals twirling about the stem. She looked at him again, without hesitation, very matter-of-fact in her delivery, as if she were talking of the weather, though each of her words was chosen carefully, a purpose behind each one.

"I've heard promises from here to Elysium. Promises are just words, and a man's word can be readily broken. I can't do anything with your easy words."

[OOC: I found all these Hornblower icons, I'm a big fan so I thought they were funny, glad you LOLed.]

Ares looked at her with determination. This was his rule on the line, beating Zeus overwhelmingly was on the line, this would tip the scales if he could get her and through her get Hades.

"I swear it by Styx," he put his fist in front of his chest and held out his hand for her to shake. "When I rule, there will be no officious meddling. You will be able to make your choices and have them respected and followed."

[They're hilarious! XD]

Persephone took his hand, shaking it firmly, her eyes never leaving his.

"I hope your confidence is not misplaced, brazen Lord of War," she said. She felt the breeze pick up and glanced back toward the nymphs before looking at him once more.

"My mother might be approaching. This conversation never happened, Ares," she said, and she turned around and went back to her company, picking up the skirt of her chiton, himation of royal purple billowing out behind her, crocuses and larkspur bouncing lively in her dark tresses as she went.
