Ares and Hera: Planting Seeds of Doubt
Who: Ares and Hera
What: Planting seeds of doubt
Where: Mount Olympus
When: After Zeus makes the announcement and after he has recruited Eris, Deimos, Phobos, Aphrodite, Eros, Anteros, Hebe and tried unsuccessfully to recruit Hades
Rating: T
Status: In progress

Several days had past since Zeus had made his announcement and Ares had been gathering allies with almost complete success. The only person he had failed to sway was Hades, but he had a plan for that. He would be visiting the fields after he went to Olympus and then the sea. He just had to speak to his mother first, then Poseidon. He would get a little more leverage before he went with another approach to try to get more backing.

He had timed it so that Zeus was not around when he went up to her. Olympus had been shaking with her rage and the war god had heard that his mother was not with his father very much since the announcement. It had been an insult to all of them and he was hoping he could persuade her that they needed to take action, just like he had been able to persuade Hebe.

Even if he could not get her to side with him at that moment, he could talk to her, he could start to plant seeds of doubt about Zeus or feed any doubts the sky queen might already have. He had already talked to Eris about it and they had a plan. He was not going to take any more chances with being turned down. They needed to gather as many as they could, and so far they had the titans and they had Eris, Deimos, Phobos, Aphrodite, Eros, Anteros and Hebe.

He knocked on his mother's chamber's door and waited for a reply.

Hera had been pacing the length of her chamber, a look of stormy rage clouding her lovely features. The time that had passed hadn't diminished her fury over what had happened. This was the penultimate event in an all too long list of humiliations her husband had heaped upon her over the centuries, starting with how he had forcefully taken her virginity all those eons ago. She had always known, how could she not, how much he favored that golden bastard Apollo, but for Zeus to actually choose him as his heir, that was too much for her to bear.

What was so wrong with the children she herself had bore him? Well, with the exception of Hephaestus, obviously. True, Eris was too much of a troublemaker at times, but Hebe and Eileithyia were as good as good could be. And Ares, her firstborn, Zeus' rightful heir was strong, respected. Yes, his lust for blood was a little much at times, even for hers, but that didn't mean there was any legitimate excuse to rob him of his place in the succession.

The sound of the knock jolted her from her thoughts and her dark eyes flew to the door. "Enter," she called out, her voice taking on its usual imperious edge, traced with an underlying hint of her frustration.

Ares opened the door, he noticed the frustration and noticed the imperiousness in her voice. She was upset, he hoped it was still with his father. He needed her to still be upset with him, he needed to be able to get her to support him, her son, instead of the man who had wronged their family so many times. He noticed a hint of the stormy rage, his mother was beautiful no matter what expression was on her features, why had his father always taken her for granted?

"Hello mother," he said. "I am sorry to bother you, but I need to talk to you about something important. How are you feeling?" he asked. His voice was soft, this was because he both did not want everyone to know he was there and because he was concerned about her. He wanted her to side with him of course, but he also wanted to make sure she was alright. She was his mother and even though she thought he was a little over zealous at times with his love of warfare and bloodshed, he loved her very much and wanted her to be happy, she deserved more then this.

She offered her son as benevolent a smile as she could manage at the moment, extending her hand to him. "Humiliated, that's how I'm feeling," she responded with no small amount of bitterness. "But that's hardly a novel development. Your father seems quite determined that I walk through life in a state of constant humiliation."

Her lips pressed together into a thin line. "This time, however, it's not only me he's insulted," she added. "He's insulted you as well, my son-and by default your sisters and brother." It was one of the few times she'd ever willingly acknowledged Hephaestus' existence, let alone the fact that he was a son of hers, aloud. But he, too, had been effectively snubbed even if he wasn't her favored child and it smarted just as much as the careless discarding of the others had. "Naming that impudent Apollo as his heir instead of you. I'm never going to forgive him for this. Never!""

Ares took her hand and kissed it, he tried to smile as well but it was difficult given the situation. "He's humiliated us all," he said. "He disrespects you constantly and disrespects our family." If Zeus even had a notion of family, which Ares doubted.

The mention of Hephaestus did not go unnoticed, if anything it showed Ares the depth to which his father's action had affected his mother. Her last words gave him a chance to hint at what he wanted and what he was planning. He placed his hand on her shoulder gently, in a reassuring manner. "You should not have to. You should not have to forgive him, what he has done is unforgivable, the way he has always treated you is unforgivable. You are a very strong woman, mother, I love you and admire you, but he has crossed the line more than once, you deserve more than that."

A wry smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. "Perhaps I do," she conceded. "But what is to be done about it? He gets complete carte blanche to do as he wishes simply because he rules the heavens. A title that he's never deserved, mind you," she couldn't help but add, malice seeping into her voice. "Poseidon, even Hades, would've been a more adept ruler than your pretentious louse of a father. As would you, my son. Far better than almighty Zeus and infinite times better than that wretched golden bastard he got off of that tramp Leto."

"Maybe something can be done about it," Ares said. He noticed the malice that had made its way into her voice. "I am sure there are others who feel the same way. Zeus will never change, he has not changed in the thousands of years he has ruled. There is no reason to think anything could make him change, just like there is no reason to think he will abandon his pretentious ways or the tramps he chases or favoring the hundreds of children he has had by them. But I think the time has come where we need to think about change and whether it might be the best thing," he said. "My uncles would probably feel the same way," he added.

Hera arched a delicate eyebrow, her head tilting a little to one side as she regarded her soon coolly. "What sort of change did you have in mind?" She inquired, her curiosity piqued. Ares was right about one thing-Zeus was never going to change. After centuries of enduring abuse of all kinds at his hands, she had learned that the hard way.

[ooc: ack, sorry for the delay. again.]
