Persephone and Pan: Call of the Wild

Who: Persephone and Pan
What: With the rise of Humanity the wild world has all but been destroyed. To save his domain Pan begins a journey to unite all the rustic gods of Greece.
Where: The Underworld
When: Only a few years before the Great War/ a few weeks before spring.
Rating: TBD
Status: Complete

Pan stepped forward on to the ancient boat. While tightening his grip on his walking stick he glanced into the abyss that was the river Styx, the river of hate. He'd paid the ferry-god Charon and now he must cross the river into the domain of Hades. Pan glanced off to the side as the boat lumbered forward across the dark river. A small sigh escaped the nature god's lips as he covered tightly into his wool cloak. He held close his olive tree walking stick as they floated about. There was no turning back now.

He had traveled far now from Arcadia. Far from the once majestic wild woods and mountains in which he made his home. The all too familiar despair settled in as he dwelled on what once was. So many of his people had perished since then. So many of his animals too, they were his children, hunted to extinction by the rise of man. Even the fauns and satyrs of which he ruled found no solace in humankind's growing expansion. Now trees were cut down and rivers polluted. No one could have foreseen man's domination of the natural world. None of his prophetic rustic powers had revealed it and now he feared his domain was gone.

While quickly retreating his people to the last of his sacred grooves, Pan had developed a plan. He had hope for the future. Pan just refused not to fight for wild nature. He journeyed across all of the world looking for the other gods of nature so that they might unite to combat this threat. He fancied taking his case to Zeus with his allies and pushing for action to check the expansion of humankind. First though he would have to find his brethren, the other gods of nature. There were four of them in the Olympic pantheon. Four rustic gods strong. Pan quickly recalled the faces of the other three. There was Artemis the hunter and protector of virgins.  Demeter the keeper of seasons, and mother of the green growing world. And last but not least, the fertility youth goddess Kore whose famous wild fields of flowers were the envy of many.

The only problem was that Kore was no longer Kore. She had long sense abandoned the name of her green roots to that of Persephone. She was now the wife of Hades lord of the dead. Her domain was the one he crossed into now. As Charon guided his ferryboat to the shore of the Underworld, Pan stepped off into it's cold hard stony beach. He was sure word had spread of his presence within the realm of Hades. He only hoped the lady of the dead would be welcoming. She was a bit older then he now and this place was incredibly scary. Still best press on. Pan was in despair and at the end of his rope. He needed Kore.

Pan followed a servant of Hades into the throne room of the King and Queen. This was it. Stepping forward, Pan raised his voice so that Kore would hear him now. "I am Pan, God of the Wild." Peeped the goat man as he glanced around. "I seek an audience with Persephone Queen of the Underworld."

Word traveled quickly in the House of Hades, news spreading like wildfire in the still Stygian air, past the ferocious three-headed hound, across the vast Asphodel Meadows where the sable-black cattle grazed under the watchful eye of the daimon herdsman Menoetes, through the orchards of pomegranate and groves of poplar and cypress, finally reaching the echoing halls of the golden palace in the dark realm.

So when the Satyr god appeared through the large doors in the remorseless throne room of the King and Queen of the dead, it came as little surprise. The grim court was there assembled, the Erinyes -- Alecto, Tisiphone, and Megaera, with their gruesome faces and torn wings -- and the three Judges -- Aecus, Guardian of the Keys of Hades and the Judge of the men of Europe, Rhadamanthus, Lord of Elysium and Judge of the men of Asia, and Minos, the Judge of the final vote. All were assembled before the King and Queen, sitting on their thrones, presiding, deathly resplendent, her hand in his.

Persephone knew who he was before he said his name; his slightly bearded, youthful appearance was as familiar as his voice. It had been a long time since she'd seen or heard from him.

"And an audience you shall have, God of the Wild," she said, regally.

A smile tugged at the Chthonic Queen's lips as she nodded to the Furies and Judges, to her husband and King, squeezing his hand as she excused herself. She rose from the dark throne, gathering the skirt of her jade chiton and darker himation, crown and matching jewels glittering in the dim light, a stark contrast against her now-pale skin, though she looked as fresh and lively as ever, that horrible mantle of daughterliness still clinging to her, perhaps aided by the flowers woven into her tresses.

"Let us walk," she said warmly, gesturing out of the room as she approached him, "so that I can show you the groves and orchards, and you can tell me what it is that brings you so far from home, gracing us with your lively presence." A poor effort at a pun, granted, but it was really so seldom that they had visitors who were animated, not fresh from the grave. Her dark eyes were alight with mirth as she regarded him.

My, this place filled Pan with sudden dread. Here before him sat the court of courts. Both the legendary Erinyes and the Judges of mortal man's souls in one room! His gaze swept over the court, pausing on each face seated before him. The furies in particular drew his eyes the least. Their very presence was uncomfortable and to meet their gaze was most unwise. Hades and Persephone were the last two faces of the court that Pan glanced over. The king and his queen. He had to admit, he had always pitied Hades when he had heard the god's tale. It had been spoken to him long ago as a child by his father Hermes. The third brother of the big three whose job was considered the lowest. At the time he had thought Hades a sad figure forced into a destiny not of his choosing. Now the king of the dead looked drained. He held no emotion on his face, he simply looked on watching him. Some how that was more disturbing then anger or hate. Pan felt a shudder release him as glanced away from those black eyes. He glanced up as Kore spoke. No, not Kore. He felt an intake of breath as Pan locked eyes with Persephone. She was beautiful but there was a stillness to her as she spoke. Her eyes seemed haunted to him. Everything about her a contrast to her husband. He had heard from his father, that Hermes had once courted the lovely Persephone. He doubted that no longer. Pan briefly wondered what life would have been like if she had been his mother.

Dashing his idle thoughts aside, Pan bowed low to the court as Persephone granted his wish. He thought about answering back that he was delighted at the idea of walking away from this terrifying room, but settled against that. Being a rustic god, Pan wasn't the greatest at proper etiquette. He certainly didn't want to anger the golden court. Making an enemy of the big three was never a good idea!

At a hastened pace he followed after the enchanting Queen as she flowed to the room's exit. His hooves made a "Clop, Clop. Clop, Clop." sound against the hard stone floor as he hurried after her. At the mention of greenery Pan looked visibly excited. "Groves, orchards? Grown down...." He paused for a moment not wanting to sound insulting at his word choice. "..here?" He hadn't known it was possible for anything to grow in the cold darkness of the Underworld. Leave it to a daughter of Demeter! Kore had always been so talented with her flowers and meadows.

He swallowed a lump in his throat at her jest. Despite being an immortal, the Shepherd of nature was disturbed by all the death. "Arcadia is a long ways from your realm to be sure." He added conversationally with an honest good natured smile. "I just wish we could have met again under better circumstances."

The groves and orchards were not too terribly far from the throne room -- the vast, airy, ornately-decorated winding halls and courtyards made it seem more of a walk than it actually was. As they approached the doors that led outside, shadows seemed to open them, as if on cue.

A small chuckle escaped Persephone as she observed his excitement, perhaps surprise, his expression absolutely endearing.

"Yes, down here," she said, her voice warm despite the cool breeze in the air. She smiled. "It's not as bad as one might think -- certainly not as bad as I imagined, at first. The groves were actually here when I got here." She smirked slightly as they walked among the trees. "I've added my touches here and there -- Elysium is particularly lush. But, here we have the famous pomegranate orchards." She paused, could still taste the bittersweet arils, so many centuries later, and knew was tasting death, had known then, though most everyone thought otherwise.

"I'd offer you something to eat or drink, but, given the particular effects of the consumables down here, I think it would make Hermes terribly cross with me, and we can't have that," she said. Indeed, perhaps it was the fact that Hermes was his father that made her so amiable and obliging to the Wilderness God. She and the Messenger God had been close since before she could remember -- it was with him, to this day, that she would share the darkest things nearest her heart in the time she spent under the rays of the sun. Pan had his father's good-natured smile, and made that same expression when he got excited.

"People seldom come here to throw parties or have a good time." Yes, it was always so-and-so died, or can I borrow such-and-such. "So what is it that brings you here?" she inquired.

He listened to her words as they walked in the grooves. Clopping about among the plant life, he watched her with concern written on his face. It was hard to imagine what it must have been like to be in Kore's place then. He knew the tale from father. She had been kidnapped he recalled. Thrown into the Underworld by Hades after a devious plan had been hatched by Zeus. "Were you scared?" He asked suddenly. Then added after a moment, "I would be."

"That's ok. I'm not hungry." He added quickly after hearing her speak of food and drink. Actually he was a bit thirsty from the ride, but there was no way the faun god was drinking a thing after hearing that.

And there it was. Pan frowned a bit to himself. She had asked the big question of why he had come. Well, best get on with it. His tail nervously flickered up and down as he paused to find the right words. "Uhm, actually, I guess the short answer would be for you. I need your help Persephone, if you will give it?" He scratched the back of his neck and glanced to the floor as he spoke. He wondered if he should continue or wait. Royalty niceties was a bit difficult to grasp. He decided to wait and allow her to chew this bit of information. "You groove is wonderful." He complimented her in order to fill in the silence.

The Iron Queen was quiet, thoughtful for a moment. A screech-owl hooted nearby, landing on a low branch. "Scared? Mm, a little, at first. I was more angry than scared, actually. I tried to swim across the Acheron. The ferryman pulled me out, rather drenched and displeased," she laughed then, a giggle escaping her, the sound almost out-of-place in the ominous Land of the Dead. I could have made it! she'd told him, and he'd shaken his head, smirking, before escorting her back to the palace. "But I soon found that there was nothing to be scared of," she added, quite cryptically.

"Thank you. It takes a little getting used to -- but I can't complain." She studied him as she thought on his question, taking note of his posture, the way he glanced at the floor, the certain degree of uncertainty about him. She placed a hand on his shoulder, giving it a reassuring squeeze, a small smile on her lips. "What do you need me to help with?" she asked, clearly concerned.

There was an image of the Queen, Pan had never thought he'd be shared with. Kore swimming across the black river as she fled her husband to be. She had tenacity, he'd give her that. He glanced up instinctively at the cooing of the owl. His yellow eyes looked on it's dim form in the blackness, the faun was drawn to the animal as it was drawn to him, but he tried to shake it. Business first.

Pan felt his grip tighten on his walking stick as she asked what it was he wanted her for. Her touch was soothing, but he shuffled about in his wool cloak nonetheless. This was more from avoidance then anything else. It was hard answering the question directly. How could he admit that things were as bad off as they were? Instead graceful steps would take the nature god deeper into the trees. His eye locked on the bird within the darkness as it watched him. "Yes, a lovely groove." Head cantered back at her with an intense sorrow in his yellow faun's eyes. "Too bad it's one of the last." There it was. His feelings unfolded at last. The look given then to the Spring Goddess was haunted. "You see. I'm not sure I have a home to go back too." He begin as his brow knitted. "Man has destroyed it."

Persephone watched him, thoughtful, silent for a long moment. She had seen the slow, subtle deterioration, even on Enna, when she ventured there for the Spring and Summer. Man had started to make claims on the wilderness, had cut and carved out the land. Populations flourishing meant more land needed to be settled, more habitats destroyed, resources exploited. In the search for more resources, attempts to gain more land, man had waged war against fellow man, and in the process, burnt down or otherwise destroyed much of nature. None of this was stated, only silently observed, but it did not sit well with the Spring Goddess turned Chthonic Queen, just as the continued allowance of it did not. She could feel the sorrow in his amber eyes, knew it well, in fact. And yet, at least she always had a place to return to, a place that was constant, kept the same, sacred.

"Man has managed to destroy many a thing," she said, with a soft sigh. "The powers that be above have not seen it fit to interfere--it makes one wonder what it might take to initiate action." She paused, looking at him pointedly. "What's your plan, and how would you like me to help?" she asked.

"I'm going to Olympus. There I'll take my case to the twelve, and to Zeus." The words felt heavy as he spoke them. It was one thing to think about visiting Zeus, but another to speak his name aloud. It was dangerous, even in the halls of Hades, but this was his charge. He would save his world or crash and burn with it. "Though my quest could carry more weight with a certain Spring Goddess at my side.." An honest smile touched his lips as he let the word hang for emphasis.

His thoughts flickered for a moment, even if she did agree there were still the others. Demeter and Artemis. The mother and the virgin. Their help he would seek next, though he had a thin hope of Persephone aiding in this. It was no coincidence that he had chosen to visit her with spring but a pebble's drop away. Demeter loved her daughter very much, and it would carry weight from both Hades and Demeter to gain her support on his foolish quest to bring back the old world. Still All he needed was for her to agree, and he would have the weight of three more gods behind him. A staggering sum indeed. "I would be honored if you would join my cause." He locked eyes with the Queen.

"That is quite a task," she said, regarding him carefully. It was a major matter, but one that needed to be addressed. It was not the sort of thing that could be faced with ease, not the sort of thing that was easily spoken about. Rarely did Persephone raise any sort of protest or cause above; seldom did she get involved in anything of that nature. It was a sharp contrast with her life below, where Hades had raised her to a throne, given her a crown, made her his Queen. And yet, things were so much simpler in the Stygnian realm--things were easier to control; there were less conflicting interests and personalities; politics were not involved.

Her dark eyes were set, but she regarded him with a small smile as she nodded, just slightly.

"I would be more than happy to loan my support," she said, after a long moment. It was not the sort of thing she was used to being asked for, a long cry from borrowing the dog, or bringing back a loved one. It was the right thing, for the right reasons, and Hermes' son was asking for it--she could not have denied him her help.

"Who else has agreed to support you?" she asked, the next logical question.

He gave a solemn nod at her acceptance. He knew this must have been out of the blue, it was more than apparent that things seldom changed down here in the dark. But, for half of the year she was one of Pan's peers. She was also a goddess of the spring season and her duties lay just as much with the living world as it did with the dead.

Well that was one down. Now there was only two to go. "None yet." He said while watching her face. "But, there are four of us, you know? Four rustic gods. You and I are but half." He paused trying to collect his thoughts. His grip on his walking staff loosened a bit as he thought about how best to explain his plans.

"There is still Demeter, your mother, and Artemis, the huntress to be found. They too must be told of the threat. I was hoping I could talk you into, uhm.." He let the words hand for a moment. "Well, you know spring is coming up, and She is your mother? I could find the virgin if you will look for Green mother." That's what he called her, Green mother. It was a fond thought of childhood names. Pan had fond memories of finding Demeter hiding her grooves and chasing her around with his pipes. "I intend to unite us all. It's never been done before, but we've never had anything like this happen!" There was determination in his voice.

Her brows went up just slightly, surprise lasting for just a fraction of a moment on her pale features. He'd gone to the Underworld first? He was brave -- that much could certainly not be denied, as his overall determination could not be denied. Persephone found it admirable, which made it all the easier to agree. She listened intently to his plans, thinking.

"Hephaestus and Dionysus might be allies in your quest, as well," she said. Hephaestus was known, after all, for riding through the wilds with Satyrs, and the wanderings of Dionysus through the wild lands and his ties to wild vegetation could also make him sympathetic. A smile again made its way to her lips. "Your father might also be helpful," she added, thinking of Hermes in the mountain glades, and with the herds and flocks.

"I will talk to my mother in a few weeks, once Spring is here and I've had a couple of days to settle, if it will help," she said, frowning slightly. The coming of Spring meant many things -- a return to the surface, to the fields and flowers she relished beneath the clear blue sky, under the light of the sun, to her mother, whom she loved, time spent with her sisters, with Hermes, and yet, it meant six months away, six months away from him and the complex emotions that came with that. She preferred not to think on it, but with each mention of the coming season, it was brought afresh to her mind. The unsettled thoughts were kept far beneath the surface, however, hinted at only by her faint frown.

"I think what you are doing is admirable, the right thing for the right reasons. You can count on my support, Pan," she said.

"Your right, seeking their aide is a good idea." He admitted as he looked forward in thought. He disliked Hephaestus. Mostly it was because he represented technology. Technology the Roman's were now using to up root his precious trees. But, he wouldn't turn help away. Uncle Dionysus was a given as was his dear father. Her advice was sound. His spirits were starting to lift already. He could do this, they could do this.

"I' thought about asking Rhea, and maybe Gaia herself. But, Titans never get involved with the twelve's politics." He admitted with regret. He liked the titans but, unfortunately, Zeus did not. It was well known the king of the gods held a firm dislike for the establishment of the golden age. Pan would have loved all the help he could get, but he was worried about Zeus acting rashly towards the Titan goddesses.

"Thanks, that means a lot. I'm glad I got to see you again too. Father speaks so highly of you, Persephone." He smiled at her as he bound his wool cloak tighter. "Well, then I'm off to find Artemis. Any advice where to look? I thought about mulling around the Amazon's territory with a parade of infant animals at my trail. That would get her attention!" He joked with a spirited laugh. Artemis loved children, and held the cubs of animals close to her heart.

"I think your intuition about the Titans serves you well. You need to weigh all factors. You are certainly off to a good start." And it was true. The fact that he had thought through things extensively, had considered the possibilities, was evident. And, perhaps most importantly, he was taking the initiative in this great matter.

"You're welcome, and I am glad to see you, though I do wish it were under better circumstances," she said, before pausing, smiling again. "Your father is a great man, and my dearest friend." It seemed a paradox, and yet she trusted the trickster god with the secrets nearest and dearest to her heart. She chuckled, most amused at his joke about the infant animals.

"That would be one way to get her attention, probably the easiest," she said, with a wink. "I've spent considerable time with her around Enna, though I would also check Crete, maybe around Ephesus or Delos," she added, thoughtfully. "But those are many places, in different parts, and there are likewise many more where she might be. I would search first where the hunt is best, where the mortals have least disturbed the land--that is where you are surest to find her," she said.

"Thank you again Persephone. I will first seek her in Enna, and then travel deeper from there into the wild." She was very kind, her words lifting his spirits dramatically. Who said the land of dead was as dreary as the tales say? Well, actually, he imagined without the Queen, a lot of warmth was gone during the spring and summer months. He briefly imagined the temperament of Hades without Persephone and thought it best not to come back for awhile.

"With your permission, then I will take my leave of you." Spoke the Faun God as he turned to trod back to the river, where his ferry ride awaited. "Say hello to Hades for me." He offered briefly before leaving to seek the huntress.
