Emberlynn/Hebe and Victor/Apollo: A certain proposal
Who: Emberlynn/Hebe and Victor/Apollo
What: New Years' Celebration, with a special surprise -- but Apollo gets more than he bargained for
Where: Premiere, at the Athenaeum Hotel Intercontinental
When: Evening of 12/31
Rating: tbd
Status: In progress

Athens was ready for the New Year that was nearly upon them. Festivities were happening across the ancient city, many hotels having parties and special events planned for the evening. Almost every rooftop bar with a view to the fireworks that would be set off at midnight, it seemed, was jammed. Premiere, at the Athenaeum Hotel Intercontinental, was sold out, as were many other hotels with 5-star amenities. There was a special buffet, and a prix fixe dinner on the rooftop restaurant. The venue itself provided an excellent, enviable view of the fireworks that would light up the Acropolis. Dinner had gone well, and the atmosphere was perfect.

But the evening would have more surprises in store for our heroes.

Apollo fixed his tie in the mirror of the bathroom, running a hand through his sunny blond hair one last time. He cleared his throat, going over everything just once more. Everything was ready; everything was set. A smile, somewhat nervous, tugged its way reluctantly across his features. He shook his head, trying to shake off the feeling of anxiety, as if the physical action would somehow appease his psyche. Apollo was not the nervous sort. In fact, he was anything but that. He was confident, almost overly so, at times, but she made things different. She affected him in a way he'd never known a woman could, and it was almost unnerving. He placed his hands in his pockets, fingertips feeling what they needed, as he took a breath, then turned to the door, walking out of it and onto the rooftop, looking for Hebe.

Tonight was the night.

Hebe was used to extravagant parties, but this was different. Something was different in the air and she just couldn’t put her finger on it. It was unsettling but not in a bad way, just had her a bit off her A-game. Not that she ever felt on her A-game around Apollo, but that was a different story entirely.

While Apollo had excused himself to the bathroom, she had told him she was going out on the balcony for some fresh air. She wore a sleek floor length off-white satin dress whose neck line gathered softly both in front and in back, the only embellishment was a simple strand of silver beaded lace that circled her hips. Her dark hair had been pulled back loosely and was dotted sparingly with small silver jewels as is cascaded in curls down her back, circling her head where two simple jeweled strands. Never in her mortal life had she looked more like the Hebe she had been as the cup-bearer of the Gods, the Gladding Princess. She smiled looking over the city, well, it had been an effect she had painstakingly taken care to execute.

She opened her small clutch and retrieved a cigarette, some mortal habits just seemed so pointless to break, and lit it inhaling deeply before exhaling slowly over the balcony watching the silver smoke disappear into the sky.

Apollo scarcely had to scan the room before his eyes fell on her -- or rather, were drawn to her. She looked so majestic -- she always did, but there was something especially alluring about her that evening. He could almost see her again, among the clouds and columns, a princess among the gods of Olympus. His hand instinctively went to his pocket again, as he approached her, memorizing each detail of her heavenly appearance; it was as if he was staring at perfection incarnate.

His fingertips traced over her back, through the gentle curls of chestnut, up toward her shoulders, and he leaned against the balcony, looking at her.

"I know I've said it about a thousand times tonight, but you look breathtaking," he said.

Hebe smiled his touch only slightly startling her as she turned into him “Well I can say a girl could not tire of someone telling her how beautiful she is.” She bantered coyly “You don’t look half bad yourself either” she added with a small smirk as she finished off her cigarette flicking the remains into the darkness with out a second thought.

“So I have some good news.” She beamed with a smile “There is all this hype in Hollywood right now with Greek stuff, the Percy Jackson movie, Clash of the Titians, I actually spoke with my agent and he got me a roll in a little movie that is shooting on location here. So I am going to get to stay for a while longer.” She smiled fully.

"Thanks. I like to think I clean up well," he said, smirking only slightly. But my, was she a vision. She was what epic poetry was written about. He could have put together stanza upon stanza about her, to rival the length of the Iliad or Odyssey. Her news, however, was enough to take his mind off thoughts of how her smile was like a glorious sunrise, how her lips curved elegantly, her brown eyes alight.

"That's fantastic!" he could barely contain himself as she told him the news. His arms were wrapped around her in a moment, and he hugged her tightly, picking her up and spinning her around in his arms, before putting her down, though his hold remained.

"I'm so glad. That's great news, Hebe," he said, a smile spreading across his own features, bright and brilliant.

Hebe herself could not help but giggle at he spun he around. His smile was radiant as ever, she felt almost blinded by it. As he put her down she put her own arms around him, sliding into his hold like she was made for his arms. “I was quite pleased with the news myself,” she smirked “and now that I have a respectable boyfriend my publicist is backing off, so the world is opening up to me again.” She giggled “or as much as it can for a girl who just loves to make front page news.”

Hebe looked around the party before looking back up at Apollo “This is a perfect night.” in truth Hebe felt like a princess again, at this fabulous party surround by beautiful people, food and things. Not to mention the beautiful man on her arm. It was little girls dreams where made of.

"Respectable? Does your publicist know I write smut?" he teased, a small laugh escaping him. It was as if there was only her, only him and her, just the two of them, alone with the view of the city in the background -- it seemed no one else was there at that moment, not the people eating, or drinking, or making ready to bring in the New Year. No, there was just Hebe and Apollo.

"Any evening is perfect with you in it," he said, pressing his forehead to hers, blue eyes meeting her darker ones. He had to stop himself from reaching into his pocket and pulling out its contents right then and there. No, patience. Patience, Apollo. Unfortunately, if there was one thing the Poetry God had practically never exhibited, it had been patience. Still, he tried.

“I think we will keep that a little secret between us.” She said with a laugh under her words. “Somehow I don’t think he would be thrilled with the idea of me playing the part of a muse for a harlequin romance novel.” She teased. “But I am sure it could do wonders for your sales, my fan-base is very loyal.” She added with a wink, as if his books needed any help to sell! He was the god of poetry, girls have swooned for all eternity at his words, and it was no different now.

At his words she could not hide the blush that crept into her cheeks “I’m sure you say that to all the girls.” Because even after everything that had happened between them Hebe could still not believe that Apollo loved her so, part of her just couldn’t accept it. It was however a very small part. It also didn’t help that she was very bad at taking complements from him.

"As you wish, milady," he said, in an almost chivalric sort of way, though his blue eyes shone with mirth. Ah, but if she'd only known how she'd inspired him so over the years, stretching back centuries. He paused, before turning a little more serious.

"I've said a lot of things, to a lot of girls, but not that," he said, candidly. He ran a hand through his hair, in a most sheepish sort of manner, almost uncharacteristic for the Poetry God. "You know you're more than just a muse," he added, softly. "Right?"

The city below, and the party around them seemed to become more lively, as the change of hour drew closer. His fingers twitched just slightly. Patience.

His question caught her off guard “Apollo,” she said softly and after a second she couldn’t bring herself to look into his eyes and instead spoke to his feet. “You are all I ever wanted,” she began “but, I can’t help but be wary. I’ve never gotten what I wanted before and I guess part of me is just waiting for you to realize that there is more for you then this disregarded princess.” She confessed slowly.

She slowly looked back up at him, her eyes solid not betraying the wealth of feelings that where threatening to overflow (turns out acting was good for something). “I love you Apollo, but part of my mind dose not want to let me forget your track record.” She paused “I know its not fair, and I’m sorry, but I can’t help it.”

Apollo grabbed her hand, his fingers running over it gently, tracing circles. His eyes went to the hand he held, then back to her eyes. Patience be damned.

"I could never disregard you," he said, looking at her intently. "Never, ever."

His free hand went to his pocket, and he pulled out a box, opening it as he knelt down before her, on one knee. A ring, golden band with channel-set round diamonds surrounding a larger diamond, in a classic six-prong Tiffany setting1 shone brilliantly in the box, a breathtaking sight, but nothing compared to the goddess who stood before him.

"You see, you're everything to me. I love you more than anything. Heavenly Hebe, will you marry me?"

He almost held his breath as he looked at her through his piercing blue eyes -- for the moment, everything around them seemed to stop -- as he awaited her reply with no small amount of anticipation.

The second he began to kneel while holding her hand she tried to pull him back up to his feet to no avail. She shook her head slightly while her free hand went over her mouth as tears sprang to her eyes. It was not that she did not want to hear what he had to say, quite the opposite actually, it was more that she didn’t know how to deal with what he was about to say. As he opened the box she felt like her legs turned to jello as her covered mouth choked back a sob as makeup was washed away by the tears that where falling freely down her face.
And then he said it, and Hebe felt time stop. It had to have stopped because her heart stopped and she forgot to breath. And her eyes found his, pool of perfect, warm sky blue. She hoped what felt like an eternity to her was only a second to him. She didn’t want him waiting. She slowly uncovered her mouth and began to not, because she forgot how to use words. But eventually her words found her and she stammered out “ I… I…y-yes…YES! Oh Apollo, a million times, yes!” even though he was still kneeling she flung her arms around his shoulder.

To say it felt like an eternity, and not a second, would have been an understatement. It was the longest second of Apollo's existence -- immortal or otherwise -- and there was a second when, as he saw the tears spring to her eyes, he feared the worst. The words that came forth from those beautiful lips of hers barely registered. It was only when she flung her arms around him that it hit him.

She said yes.

His own arms wrapped around her, and he stood up, slowly, taking the ring, and taking her left hand in his, and placing the ring gently on her finger. It sparkled brilliantly, though it paled in comparison with the vibrance of the goddess before him, makeup washed away and all -- she needed not the foundation, or concealer, or eyeliner, mascara, or any of that other stuff.

"You've made me the happiest man on earth, a million times over," he said, winking at her as a smile spread over his features, an almost relieved expression. His thumbs moved over her face, and wiped the tears away.

The ring fit perfectly over her trembling finger, Hebe suspected that he had pulled the old trick of stealing one of her rings to get her size. But that didn’t matter. She tried to wipe the tears from her own face “I feel ridiculous,” she informed him, laughter under the tear choked voice “I shouldn’t be crying! I’ve never been so happy.” But slowly the tears began to fade but her smile remained.

Hebe was beginning to think she had a mental condition, because no matter what, no matter how happy she was or wanted to be part of her brain always dwelled on the bad. And right now it would be Herakles and what would happen if he was found or if he found her. What would happen when they returned to Olympus and she was still married to the brut, there was not really divorce in the sky kingdom.

Yes, well, guilty as charged. It had been quite a task, too, trying to get one of those rings. And Apollo wasn't the sort who was the most apt at obtaining such things, so it had taken some time. He was no Trickster God; that much was certain.

"Ridiculous? You could never be ridiculous," he said, softly, wiping back the remaining tears.

Apollo had reasoned out the whole thing -- not that it was typically something he would do, but in this case, he made an exception. It was rather like when he'd thought about the whole Orestes fiasco, though that had been long ago. Imprisonment in Tartarus basically equated death, after all, so if their demigod half-brother had joined the rest below, then it could be said that he had died. Hebe had not gone below, however, and so could be free to remarry as she wished, since Heracles had died, from Apollo's reasoning. It was not ironclad, of course, and if that failed, he had a back-up plan: Hephaestus had been granted the right to one of the Graces after he caught Aphrodite in the net with Ares, so dissolution of marriage could be fashioned, if the will was not lacking. And, at last resort -- and this was really if all else failed -- they could appeal to her mother, supreme power in things marriage-related. All these things, of course, hinged on what Hebe wanted, and that was really what was most important to Apollo in this whole thing. He wanted her to be happy, to see her smile -- really smile -- to hear her laughter and know that she was really, truly contented.

"You know I only ever want to make you happy, right?" he asked, even as those around them started to count down toward the New Year.

Hebe smiled and nodded at him “I know.” With a giggle she pulled him into her “And I you.” She informed him as people shouted all around 5…4….3…Hebe pressed her lips to his and people began to scream ’Happy New Year!’ and unload their lungs into blowers while snapping poppers. She pulled away smiling, thinking to herself This just may be a happy new year.

But a second later her eyes where not filled with Apollo, her mind not filled with thoughts of happiness, love and new beginnings. The Princess felt almost sick to her stomach before her vision wavered, in an all too familiar feeling, and the vision hit her. The mother Goddess, glowing and golden, light coming from her, in all her Titan-Goddess glory, a stark contrast to the black chiton she was wearing. Her voice was powerful yet soft in the Goddesses ears. Somehow sounding like the wind and 100 howling dogs at the same time. Hebe wanted to fall to her knees as the vision unfolded in front of her eyes but her grip on Apollo kept her strong and upright. She had been found out, Cronus appeared and the very sight of him frightend the young goddess as he lay hands on his wife. “Where have you sent them? Where are they? Where have you put the gods and goddesses that were imprisoned in Tartarus, and where are those with whom we fought to take control of Olympus?” he asked. She gave no answer, only narrowing her blue eyes at him. Overhead, the moon's light faded.
He laughed after a moment, a cold laugh as he let go of her and pulled out a black journal, waving it in front of her.

The happy kiss he'd been about to give her, the whole moment, Happy New Year wishing, everything -- it was all interrupted by the same vision. He held her close, in an almost protective sort of manner, as if he would somehow be able to protect her from anything that might come. And, much as he would have liked to think so, he knew full well that the empowered, mighty Titans, not tempered by any semblance of mortality, could easily defeat them, in their present states.

"And what is this, Rhea?" came the booming voice of their Titan grandfather. The mother Goddess seemed surprised, almost anxious -- Apollo could see it in her eyes. Overhead, just as in the vision itself, the light of the moon continued to fade, and fade fast, even as the voice came again. "Hyperion! Coeus! Crius! Iapetus!" Coeus. Apollo's blue eyes tried to blink away the vision, but it only became more clear as he heard the name of his mother's father -- Coeus, the Titan God of intellect, who, along with his wife, Phoebe, presided over the oracles, him heavenly, and her at Delphi. It was a trait Apollo himself had inherited. He could see him then, him and the other brothers, Titans of the pillars.

The ground shook, and Apollo held Hebe closer, as he held on to a column. Around them, people screamed, glasses shattered, as they fell to the ground. Overhead, the moon turned reddish in the night, as if bathed in blood. And then, her voice was clear as day again. "They needed to know, they need to know what you were going to do, how you were going to betr--" But he did not let her finish, his voice booming again. "That is enough! Hyperion and Crius, please see to her. Coeus and Iapetus, come with me. Together we will get to the bottom of this..." But she would not be silenced. Apollo's eyes opened wide with realization just before she spoke again. "You were going to betray them anyway!" he said, speaking in an almost trance-like manner.

And in that instant, he could see Cronus laying out the plan, years ago just as Rhea was laying out her own plan. He had cut the forces of the Olympians and their like in half, pitting them against one another, and now, with half of them gone, it would be only too easy to toss aside the other half. In hushed voices, in the dead of night, far away from Olympus, he met with his brothers. They would truly reign supreme once more. The time was coming. But he would not get that chance; it would be taken from him by the mother Goddess, when Rhea cast them all into the mortal plane.

He shook his head, trying to blink it away, holding steady against the column, and holding onto Hebe fiercely. The shaking had stopped. He hoped.

"Are you alright?" he asked, only a hint of unsteadiness to his voice.

Hebe had no gift for prophecy; she could only see what was shown to her. But it was more then enough to cause her heart to stop and her stomach to plummet to her feet. And despite all that had happened to them, all the hurt, Hebe could not stop her first thoughts from going directly to her brother. Ares was in many ways flawed, but not even he deserved such betrayal. Hebe tried to swallow but her mouth was dry.

Strong arms holding her close brought her back to the golden god, she looked up at him trying to hide her wet eyes but failing. She opened her moth to speak but found no words; she closed her mouth and nodded slowly. Though she and he bother knew it was a lie. She borrowed her face into his chest for a moment. She wasn’t sure how much time had passed before she pulled away to look up at him, it felt like forever and a never at the same time, it took her a few tries to find her words but she did find them eventually. “Apollo, we can’t… they’ll… destroy us. Maybe if we had powers, but like this? Never. She didn’t help us, she singed our death certificates!” now the youth goddess could no longer kept the tears from her eyes.

Apollo shook his head, stroking her hair in what he hoped was a soothing manner, his fingers running through the chestnut locks gently. He too was apprehensive -- after all, how could one not be after such a scene -- but he knew he had to be strong, had to be brave for her. And he would do whatever he could to keep her safe, no matter what that meant.

"Shhh, don't cry," he said, in as soothing a voice as Apollo had ever managed. "I'm sure Rhea knows what she was doing." He looked out across the city, then back at the goddess in front of him. "It sounds like he was going to betray everyone and take the throne for himself to begin with. I'm sure she knew she couldn't keep this going forever. She's been hinting that she might get caught since the beginning -- remember?" he said. And it was true. She had been hinting at it, had said herself that she knew not how much time she had, or how many more times they might see her. "We need to work together," he said. His eyes went to the moon, curious at the eclipse. He hadn't read anywhere that it was supposed to be that intense, or even to come at that time, though there had been news that an eclipse was coming that day. Strange. He looked back at Hebe again, pensive. "There has to be a way for us to defeat them, to get back to where we were. She's been hinting at that, as well. There has to be a way for us to win."
