Pan/Jack and Hermes/McKale

Who: Pan/Jack and Hermes/Mckale
What: Father and son meet once again.
When: Late afternoon
Where: Crowded market place of Athens
Rating: TBD
Status: Incomplete/In-progress

"You are all here for a reason, and you must come together if you are to do what must be done. You must take back what is rightfully yours -- the future depends on it."

Pan listened on as the Woman of light spoke to him. He knew her, somehow he knew her. Her warmness filled him with comfort like that of a warm sunrise on a frosty cold morning. He could feel his voice falling to a small hush as he stopped in mid stride. Hebe was also staring flatly at the woman. They were all in this together. A tremor of force rocked deep below him as everyone looked on.

"They will be looking for you. They must not find you. You must not fail."

He was a fool not to run, not to flee from this place right then and there. He could feel the ground shaking with more force and opened his mouth to speak. He wanted to tell her something. Anything, really. He just wanted her warmth to last longer in the night. But the crack of thunder as lightning streaked across his vision drowned out any thought of such nonsense.

"I must go--" the woman of his dreams said as black screams reached his ears. Those wretched voices promised of heinous violence to come. Jack clutched his ears desperately as the room begin to spin and swirl in darkness.

Jack sat up abruptly and opened his eyes. A loud bang from a passing garbage truck shattered him awake. Dreaming, he had been dreaming. There was sweat soaked along his brow. Some dream. Jack recalled his senses slowly as he leaned back in his chair near the table he was eating at. He was at an outside restaurant in the marketplace. It was getting late in the day, he must have been asleep for awhile.

Although the strange party had been a few weeks ago, the events around it still sat firmly in his mind. Who was the man Em had pointed out to him? There had been something about his face that had struck him as familiar, but he couldn't place it. And why had he thought of Em as Hebe in his dream? Questions buzzed unattested. Whatever it had been it was over now. He allowed himself a small sigh as he ordered more water. Despite the remarkably hot day he felt a chill in his bones at the thought of those tremors.

Hermes. McKale. It had been a few weeks since the party and while he now knew the truth thanks to Anteros a few things where still bothering him. One: Why had he been the last to know? It should have been so obvious and he should have known when he met Anne. Two: What the Hell? Three: Everything was moving so damn slow! and it was this last point that bothered him most, now with his eyes open and his memories returned he just could not handle how slow humans where. He hated how slow he was moving, like he was stuck in molasses.

He flicked at the lighter to light the cigarettes between his lips taking a deep inhale before making his way towards his apartment in the Exarcheia district. It was a nice place but it was a far scream from the money he had stored away in over 50 bank accounts across the world. He sighed as he walked past an outdoor café; if he had been paying attention he would have seen the boy immediately. Would have known him right away. But it was yet another side effect of this mortal body, he could only think so fast, could only notice so much.

Jack had just started sipping at his water when McKale passed by. At first he did nothing, just continued sipping at his drink. Then realization dawned on him. Was that who he thought it was? It was! He had just seen the face of the man Hebe had pointed out to him! Leaping up from his seat, Jack took off quickly following him and dived into the crowded market place. Only after a minuet did he realize he had forgotten to pay. Damn. Well, no point in going back to that place.

He felt a bit crazy doing this. There was little logic in following after a face he had just briefly seen in a party, but there was no talking sense right now. Something tugged at him, the fish hook was already in his mouth and the line was pulling him after this fellow. There had to be answers to his questions here. Answers to that feeling of fear from the tremors, and warmth from woman whom had appeared. In his mind he rather imagined himself as Alice following after the white rabbit. But, this felt right.

As Jack passed the crowd by he tried to slink just far enough back to keep from being noticed. Difficult to do when following the god of thieves and travelers.

It was a few moments before McKale/Hermes noticed he was being followed. But when he paused to answer his phone he saw him out of the corner of his eye, and again at a cross street. Young, boyish, defiantly not a cop, so why was he following him? A cop, and FBI agent had plenty or reasons to follow McKale; but a boy? He could not think of a single one.

They entered the section of Athens referred to Exarcheia, where Hermes had made his home, after all it was the shady part of town. And McKale had always felt more at home among the thieves, artists and drug dealers. That made to much sense now. Hermes crossed into an empty ally before he spoke “So any particular reason you have been following me all morning?” he inquired not turning around just yet.

Jack turned down the corner and into the alley without thinking. At this point he knew there was connection, and that this man's fate was tied to his own. He watched him stop at a dead end inside the alley way, and knew it was too late. he couldn't have been seen? Somehow it came as no surprise, yet the sound of the man's voice startled him still. It was so familar.

He thought about the question for a moment before answering, then he spoke with a confidence he hadn't known before, "It was your face that I remembered, though I'm not sure why. And your smile, That was my first memory I think."

Hermes cocked his head slowly, the voice resonating in his ears in an almost canine fashion. That voice… he turned slowly around. He blinked a few times, it took a bit for what was before his eyes to settle. He came to Arkadia, the land of many springs and mother of flocks, there was his sacred place. And he had fallen in love with the beautiful rich-tressed daughter of Dryopos. He had fallen in love with his immediately, thinking he was the most marvellouse to look upon, with goat's feet and two horns. But it was his laughter that the Luck god remembered to most, a noisy, merry-laugh. And while the nurse refused to look upon him the traveling God was quite taken and took his son to the top of Olympus and set him down beside Zeus and showed him to the rest of the gods. Then all the immortals were glad in heart and they called the boy Pan, derived from pantes meaning 'all', because he delighted all their hearts.

Rarely was the God of Tongues stunned, but this sight quieted his quick mouth. This was his son, his boy. Slowly he could not help but smile. “Pan.” Was all he could say.

His name was spoken and Pan knew. The God of the Wild closed his eyes and allowed a soft smile to reach his lips. "Father." Pan's laughter rolled once more, the boy looked eagerly unto his father's eyes with an excitement and joy almost unseen in this age. He must have been no more than a child then. Following his father on his endless errands. "Tell me again Father!" Pan begged as he pulled at his father's arm imploringly. "Tell me another story. I wish to hear the tales of all things! I wish to know father! I wish to know the another story." He walked along side Hermes, he lived for his father's smile. Lived for the joy. The two of them were a team. He was eager to learn from the traveler god.

Pan's smile grew as he remembered. He hadn't known it before, but everything had led him to this moment. How could he have not known him? Hermes, the thief. Hermes, the luck bearer, Hermes, the father. "How could I forget?"

Hermes ran to his son, and pulled him tightly into a hug burring his face into the top of his head “The same way we all did.” He counseled sweetly. He could not help but laugh. “Ok, Ok.” He obligated he son “Have I ever told you the story of the seasons? Only I know the truth, Demeter would have you believe a lie, but I was there I know the truth.” His light eyes where sparkling with mirth.

He pulled back just slightly to look at his son, his flesh and blood. He looked the same, albeit a little skinnier then Hermes remembered him, and without his furry legs and little horns. He smiled warmly down on him “My son, I am so happy to have found you again.” And Hermes hugged the boy tightly again.

Pan smiled at his father's answer and hugged him back warmly. At last he'd found what he'd been looking for. They were reunited. Pan's face drawn tight with surprise then. Imagine the Green Mother, and the seasons, and the truth of the tale. A hush fell on the boy's lips and he found himself nodding eagerly to his father's offer. Hermes was wise, the wisest of the gods in his son's eyes. He was proud to be the son of the clever trickster.

"I'm glad to see you too!" He exclaimed as he grinned ear to ear. "Tell me! What have you been doing in this mortal life?" He asked curiously, he briefly imagined Hermes reborn as a track runner, or an explorer. Maybe even a super spy like James Bond!

Hermes smiled ruffling his sons hair before beginning “She was known as Kore then. A beautiful girl, her mother kept her hidden from the court in The Fields of Enna. For Demeter feared her daughter would become yet another toll of Zeus. And there she played with The Huntress and Athena.” His eyes sparkled as he spoke of his close friend “But you can not keep such beauty, such charisma, hidden. Not for long anyway. And it was not long before the Gods started to take notice of the young girl. Ares, Apollo, Hephaestus and even my self had become taken with the girl and we all tried our hand. Presenting gifts to her mother, I offered her my staff, but Demeter rejected them all. None where good enough for her Kore. So Demeter hid her away again back into the Fields of Enna, but not before she had caught the eye of the Dark King.” Hermes smiled evilly knowing how much his son hated it when he paused for dramatic effect while telling a story.

Hermes looked around “I don’t live far from here, just around the corner actually, lets go inside and catch up.” He suggested with a smile not letting his son go but directing him around the corner towards his small flat. Opening the door her removed his coat before smirking “So you want to know what I have been busying myself with in this life?” he inquired heading towards the kitchen to put on a pot of tea “Well mostly I’ve been stealing.” He said with a wink “White collar crime, made a most wanted list or two.” He added with a smirk “other then that also helped develop on-line networking sites, like Facebook, Livejournal, stuff like that. Yourself?” he inquired pulling down two mugs.

Pan listened to the tale, and held on to each word spoken. No one could spin a tale like Hermes, Pan's father was a master of the art. "The Dark King! The Dark King!" Pan looked shocked and excited at the same time. "He who lives underneath! What did he do? What did he do, Father?" Pan jumped up and down excitedly in front of Hermes. He couldn't believe Hades would be in a story, he was so strange and frightening. Kore sounded beautiful to behold, a Spring goddess that could enchant all the gods! He grinned foolishly when he thought of Father offering to take her hand in marriage. "What happens next? Oh you must tell! Oh please do tell!" He shined with impatience and excitement at the thought of Kore and Hades, Demeter and Zeus!

Pan followed the direction of Hermes and turned down towards his place. He grinned as they stepped inside. "Nice pad, you did much better than me." He glanced around looking at odds and ends. The place certainly had his father's touch. Every once in awhile his eyes would land on something that invoked a long forgotten memory of the man who had raised him. He turned back to face Hermes as the god walked into the kitchen. "Haha! That doesn't surprise me. You are the God of Thieves. I'm sure you have traveled far and wide too." He exclaimed with joy as he smirked back. He listened on about his part in the Internet and felt generally impressed. "You always did have your hand in everything. That's good to hear." He reached for a mug as it was offered and shrugged at the question directed back at him. "Nothing near as exciting. I grew up in an orphanage in Colorado, and ran away from my foster family. I've been living on the road ever since, getting by as a street musician." He reached into his pocket showed his harmonica.

Hermes chuckled heartily as his son prattled on “Well I can’t very well tell you if you won’t be quiet.” He joked playfully before settling back into the story “Now some would have you believe it was The Dark Kings trap that caught her, built they would be wrong, because the idea was all Zeus’s. You see, The Dark king was lonely and he wanted so badly to have a wife to love. So he asked Zeus for his daughter, and Zeus gave permission. But Zeus also knew how Demeter kept her precious daughter guarded and would never consent to anything of the sort. So he made a plan, for The Dark King to kidnap her while she was playing in the fields.” Hermes brought his son close almost whispering the next part “among the other flowers lay a Narcissus, a thing of awe , it had been made to be a snare for the girl. a marvelous, radiant flower, and little Kore was amazed and reached out with both hands to take the lovely blossom. But the earth opend there in the fields, away from the company of Artemis and Athena, and the lord Hades, with his dark horses, sprang out through a cleft in the earth upon her.” Hermes Paused again “I saw the first leaf turn brown and fall from a tree. You see Pan, Demeter was so heart broken over the loss of her daughter she removed her gift from the earth as she searched for her, vowing to never return favor to the earth until her daughter returned. She searched franticly for her, you see , because none knew what happened. Demeter finally pleaded to Hecate, for she can see all things, for help. And it was with the Witches help they where able to find dear Kore.” He pause a fleeting sadness skirted across his face “But by the time they found her, it was to late, she had changed…”

Hermes smiled at his sons fervor “Well, always been a jack of all trades and a master of none.” He teased “I have traveled a lot… couldn’t stay in once place to long or else I might be caught.” He added with a smile. But his smile faded as Pan spoke of his mortal life. “Well, Colorado is beautiful, I always meant to return to its mountains.” He mused, his eyes lighting up again as pan pulled out the harmonica “I Bet you are damn good at it too.” He added with a chuckle pushing past the unpleasantness of the past, not wanting to dwell on his own. Hermes had never been very good with the dark.

Pan's jaw snapped shut then, but his eyes still shone with a glow. He listened on, as Hermes explained all the players of the game. When Zeus was spoken Pan seemed to not know what to think. In so many of his father's tales Zeus was a foil to the Gods. He was a frightening old man, who seemed to only care for his own half-god offspring. Yet, he knew his own father was a messenger of Zeus. It was strange to think that Pan's family both served and clashed with the sky lord. Something Pan's young mind could hardly wrap around. He then listened when Hermes mentioned the dark plot of Zeus and Hades. His mouth opened up in wonder. "Ohhhhhh!" The boy peeped. He knew what must come next. Kore was going to be in trouble! Pan could not imagine the sorrow of Demeter, it was just too much. He wondered what Hermes would have done if Pan had been stolen in such a way. He briefly imagined his father flying in with his winged sandals, and battling the demons of the underworld with a long bronze sword! "She had changed? Did Hades turn her into a Goblin?" That was what he had thought they did with stolen maidens, of course it was a ridiculous idea, but Pan was still a child. "Poor Green Mother," He chimed feeling pity for Demeter and her lost daughter. The sorrow must have been great indeed. He wondered what other plots Zeus had changed their world in.

Pan looked away with far off smile. "Yes it was nice there. There aren't many places left that are sacred to me." He briefly spoke, thinking of the shape of the world and the way his wild had been treated. "I'm not bad with it," He beamed at his father's compliment. "Though I'm thinking of going back to my reed-pipes, now that you have recalled me from my slumber. I wonder how my Arcadia is?" He asked to no one in particular. "I suppose the Twelve must be awake. Have you met anyone else? So far I've only run into Hebe. This mortal life must be the work of Zeus." Pan's memories of the last days of his godhood were sketchy. He could recall a sadness, but had no idea how he had come to be a mortal. I must have been the work of the sky father, who else could do such a thing? He took a sip from his mug in thought. Suddenly, it felt very strange not to have Horn to scratch under in thought.

[GOD! Sorry I never got a notification that you replied! Stupid e-mail! Never meant to leave you hanging! So so sorry!]

Hermes shook his head, a small ghost of a smile on his lips, “No, nothing quite like that.” He assured his son. “She had fallen in love with The Dark King, and love will change a woman. She was no longer little Kore, when Zeus sent me to retrieve her she was a different girl... or to say more properly she was no longer a girl, she was a woman. And a woman in love at that. And her name was Persephone.” He paused for just a second remembering, how he had to call to her many times before she took his hand, how she had confessed her actions and her love of the dark king to him. “Now there are many different stories, some say that Hades tricked her into breaking her fast, but I don’t think that’s true. I think she ate of the pomegranate willingly, because she knew her mother would never let her return to her love. For you see Pan, you can not eat of the fruit of the dead with out condemning yourself to a life under the surface.” Hermes advised his son “And because she ate of the fruit, 6 seeds, she would spend her life torn between to worlds. When she is above with her mother it is what you know of as spring and summer, and when she goes below to be the dark queen fall and winter fall across the earth.” Hermes said with a smile, thought it was slightly forced for all that his friend pretended to be content with her lot he knew he double life tore her apart, but that would be a different story for a different time.

Hermes nodded “I have seen Artemis and Apollo, Ares and Hera, Hades as well actually. Dionysus, Eros, Hephaestus, Aphrodite have peeped up it the journals.” Hermes thought out loud “Have not heard anything from Demeter, Hestia, Zeus or Athena. As far as the twelve are concerned.” At Pans comment Hermes frowned “I don’t think Zeus had anything to do with it.” Battles, blood, the crushing darkness of his prison Tartarus, Ares face looming before his a smile on his blood soaked face “No,” he repeated more definite this time “no it was not Zeus,” He recalled Rhea’s message at the Halloween party “My money is on Rhea.”
