"Technically, it's a science," Rhea leaned back in her seat in the coffee shop. "But it deals with people. Which makes it a humanity. But it uses science, which makes it a science..."
"I see," Vincent said, not really seeing.
"But you look at human history, don't you?" Simon pointed out, silently judging the students walking past the window.
"Which makes it a humanity. But we use scientific techniques to look at them, which makes it a science."
"How extraordinarily disorganised the whole thing seems," Simon said, flicking his long hair back with royal disapproval. Rhea gave a 'what can you do?' shrug, and went back to her scale model of a pyramid (using only sugar cubes).
Meetings like this were nice - a sort of escape from the usual boredom of studying alone. Even if they were doing radically (well, not that radical - they all studied a form of culture, didn't they?) different courses, there was something nice about getting together and trying to help each other out in the quiet buzz of the local cafe. Not a Starbucks, of course - Simon would have been mortified, Rhea probably couldn't afford regular coffee there and Vincent was happy to just go along with the other two because it was nice to have friends, it was nice to have people who liked him. Even if they were both a little odd.
Somewhere in the kitchen a kettle was boiling and the only waitress rushed past their table carrying drinks to people in the back. Fresh coffee seemed to permeate the air as they studied hard, occasional calling out questions like "oh...sorry, when was Catherine the great on the throne?" or "...Knees aren't balljoints are they." or perhaps "hmph, did they really expect to trip me up with such feeble questions? They should expect more from someone of my rank!"
And it was...nice.
