Space colonies, huh, what’s that about?

Well, in the years since Earth’s becoming vastly overpopulated, the human race was forced to move outward and upward--far outward and upward. Luckily, humans have always been a resourceful bunch and over the course of time, other planets have been colonized. The primary concern these days isn’t overpopulation, but fuel. Traveling from one end of the galaxy to the other isn’t cheap and with pioneers expanding ever further into space, it’s a rising trouble. Those planets closer to the former Earth--the first ones populated--are home to most of the galaxy’s thriving population. Dense metropolises, thriving business worlds and a solid government run by elected officials. All this can be found at the center of the expanding ring.

Those nearer the fringes aren’t so lucky. Though nothing runs so cheap as uncharted land, those less-densely populated planets surrounding the urban center are more like something out of a Wild West film. The chief export is pirates on the hunt for fuel, and hired guns to escort trade vessels past those very same pirates. No loyalty out in the fringes--except towards your patron, of course, and even then that’s just until you get paid.

Space is vast. There’s a little something for everyone, depending on what part of the circle you land in.

How does transportation work?

The chief mode of transportation nowadays is a good ship from one end of the galaxy to the other. In fact, there are some who make their living doing just that--ferrying passengers with good money to wherever they want to go. It’s easy to get your hands on a cheap ship, the problem is the fuel shortage. Lots of desperate men with ships to fuel have turned to piracy in order to solve this problem, and out towards the fringes, the law enforcement runs pretty thin.

Wait, what was that about pirates?

Yep. Technically, they prefer to be called opportunists, but beggars can’t be choosers. In light of the fuel supply running low, many good men and women have turned to living below the law as a means to keep their livelihood. Alternatively there are the people who responded to the rise in piracy by hiring themselves out as bodyguards to merchant vessels.

But what if I don’t want anything to do with filthy pirates?

You’re in luck! Piracy rarely occurs in the centralized planets due to the heavy government presence. You could live out a peaceful life there with relatively no danger whatsoever… Unless you happen to be the unfortunate target of a kidnapping. Sometimes people get desperate, see, and if you happen to be affiliated with an important official who just might squeeze out a ransom well, there’s no telling what might happen!

Superpowers in space?

Well, that all depends. There’s a lot that goes unexplained in the far reaches of the galaxy, and some things that look human aren’t, necessarily. While humans are still the dominant race in most cases, other species have been cropping up as man’s explorations into the reaches of space grew further. It’s cool if you want your character to retain some of the powers they might have had in their original incarnation, but no destroyers of worlds or anything too over-the-top and all-powerful. If you’re not sure whether your character’s abilities are too powerful, err on the side of caution and ask before applying.

How does communication work?

GOOD QUESTION. Almost everyone has their own personal communicating device these days, though some models are clearly more advanced than others. They range from your typical text-only model, to ones with voice and video capability, and some of the most recently-developed models even project holograms of your desired contact--though these are being used exclusively in the centralized planets as of now. In addition, certain technology wizards working alongside some enterprising merchants have created a universal feed for information to be posted through. Think of it as an intergalactic bulletin board. First used as a means for merchants to organize trade routes, the feed has since become something of a free-for-all, and it holds anything from hired guns advertising their services to bored teenagers touching base with their off-world friends. The feed operates below the radar of the government, so it sees its share of illegal activity, and you might even catch a pirate using it from time to time. From black market parts to booking a trip on a transportation, the feed is the place to look if you’re in need of something. Or if you’re bored.

Do I have to have seen Gundam 00, Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star or other such space-related series to play in this game?

No, but they are highly recommended for improving your mind!

So is this game AU, or OU?

Colonies is an AU game, which means your character doesn’t have to learn about a new currency system, or worry about where to live. Of course if he or she is on the fringes, that last one might be of some concern, but that’s all up to you.

So what about my character’s OU background?

You can sum this up pretty briefly. All we want to know is that you know all the basics about the character you’re applying for, their background and motivations. What’s really important is their AU background, so if you’re concerned about the balance, we’d recommend spending more time on that.

Is there a limit to how many characters I can apply for?

Yes. The character limit is currently set at four. Depending on how the game progresses, we might see fit to raise the number. If that happens, it’ll be public knowledge immediately, so no worries there.

Can I use samples from a previous roleplay for my application?

Regrettably, no. Since this is an AU game, we would prefer to see new samples from everyone, but we’ve tried to keep the requirements for both first person and third person very reasonable. We just want to have an idea of how your character is going to interact in this setting with their new background.

If I drop a character, can I pick them back up?

Only if you apply for them again, so think carefully before you make a drop. Someone else out there might be itching to pick them up.

What are the activity requirements?

For posts, we’d like to see at least two a month, or once every two weeks. Currently there’s no requirement for logs, though we certainly encourage them as a way to develop CR and get to know your fellow characters. Stay tuned for more activity check info.

"Journal" posts are made vis-a-vis commlinks. These can be text message style (private or public), voice message (private or public), as well as video message (again, private or public). This means you can make use of holograms, and leave a friend--or an enemy--a loving (or offensive) video recording. You can flash someone through space! But seriously, if you have any questions about where to post or what format to use, just drop a question here. And be sure to tag all your "journal" entries--which should be made to commlink for the sake of streamlining everything--with either TEXT, VOICE or VIDEO. Logs go to the logs comm, docking, and ooc posts go to the ooc comm, hangar. Further questions should be posted in the comments here, and a mod will get back to you as soon as they can!

Space is big. Feel free to create your own locations or refer to ones that exist in any fandom's canon. The idea is that all fitting space!locations from a conglomerate of series exist in this game. Space, lovingly referred to as the final frontier. For any intrepid space cowboy, the furthest depths have yet to be explored. Pirates, black holes, unstable factions, renegades — dark matter is the least of your problems.

The year is 2453, and the concept of "manifest destiny" now extends throughout the skies. Every planet from here to Heifong is in the process of being claimed by some intrepid entrepreneur or his lifelong rival, under the aegis of opposite principalities. But the individuals strong enough — or crazy enough — to actually inhabit those planets are far from the wealthy and influential, who prefer to live more comfortably on older, less unstable space stations.

These colonists are a varied lot; they have nothing else to live for, nothing else to lose...or something to run from. Outlaws or idiots? That's the real question. Some seek their fortune, others flee bad reputations; some seek simple lives, while others doggedly pursue their own death. One thing's clear: only the lucky survive.

It's fuel that poses the greatest problem. Amongst the myriad races and powers, fuel is the common currency — and, slowly but surely, it's running out. Worth far more than life itself, every colony depends on how much they have. Fuel transport is a more dangerous profession than piracy, and there are times when honest men have no choice but to become pirates.
